Victory Over Nationally Ranked Foe Caps A Nine-Win Stretch In Sunshine State For Blue Streak Softball

Michelle Murphy drove him the only run of a 1-0 win over #23 ranked Washington University on the final day of John Carroll softball's stay in Florida
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 When this year's John Carroll University softball seniors were freshmen, they helped the Blue Streaks tear through their Florida schedule with nine wins in ten games to mark the best start in program history.

History somewhat repeated itself in 2012.

Although the results were not identical, they were eerily similar. An upset win over national power Washington University (MO) was achieved on the last day of the 2009 trip, and again on Saturday to help put the finishing touches on a program-record 9-1 start to the season.

With the score deadlocked at 0-0 to start the bottom of the seventh inning, Nici Fluharty led off with a single up the middle. One batter later, Michelle Murphy doubled down the left field line to drive in the game-winning run against Washington, which began the week ranked #23 and had won its first four games of the year by pounding out 47 runs..

The Blue Streaks would come back later in the day to outslug Wisconsin-Stout by a final score of 9-6. JCU led at one point bya  9-1 margin before Stout came back to close the gap. Providing a fitting end, Brittany Danilov came in to get the final three outs, ending her week with  53 strikeouts in a total of 42 innings for the entire week while allowing only 19 hits.

The day before, John Carroll faced #19 ranked Moravian and fell by a 3-0 score to suffer its first loss of 2012. The Blue Streaks bounced back, however, and defeated a red-hot College of New Jersey team, 6-1. The Lions defeated JCU by a  5-0 count last year, but senior Olivia Mathews went 4 for 4 with one hit by pitch and three singles to pace the offense

JCU finished its one-week stay in Florida by outscoring its opponents by a 51-16 margin, won four of its nine games by a shutout and another three by allowing just a single run.

The 9-1 record is also the best mark posted by an Ohio Athletic Conference team through the first ten games this season.
