John Carroll stunned nationally ranked Otterbein University early with a first set win, but the homestanding Cardinals restored order and won the next three games to capturetheir league opener Friday night in Westerville, Ohio.
The upstart Blue Streaks trailed 17-13 in the opening set, but a nine-point run fueled by the serving of
Teresa Noewer and the attacking of
Letty Barbi carried JCU to a 25-23 win.
Sarah Orlandi capped the rally by putting away the final point after Otterbein had pulled to within a single point late.
Game two was close until midway thru when Otterbein, ahead 15-13, rattled off six of the next points. JCU closed the gap somewhat but the Cardinals preaviled 25-21.
The final two games were decidedly in favor of Otterbein as the Cardinals won by scores of 25-16 and 25-11.
Otterbein (9-5, 1-0 OAC) was led by Annie Juenger's 15 kills, the lone player in the match with double-digit kills.
John Carroll (6-11, 0-2 OAC) got eight kills apiece from Noewer and Orlandi but were done in by a season-high 37 errors on the attack
