Second sets were not kind to John Carroll on Friday at the Capital University Invitational.

The Blue Streaks fell in four games in an Ohio Athletic Conference match to start the day, then were swept at night by Alma College in a non-league contest.

In both cases, a disconcerting second set swoon was a major culprit.

Against Capital, JCU dropped a tight first set by a 25-22 score, then fell behind 18-5 in the second before losing by a 25-11 count.

The Blue Streaks recovered enough to be competitive in the third game, but trailed 21-15 before mounting a rally. Still, the Blue Streaks faced match-point at 24-22 before rattling off four consecutive kills to win the game -- three by Sarah Orlandi.

John Carroll appeared to seize momentum with that comeback, and led for a majority of the fourth frame. The Streaks led by a 17-13 count and still was up by a 20-18 score after a Julia Clark kill.

But the homestanding Crusaders would close out the match by winning seven of the final eight points.

Capital improved to 7-14 overall and 1-1 in the OAC, while John Carroll fell to 6-12 overall and 0-3 in league play despite 28 digs from Sarah Kaminski and 25 kills combined from Orlandi and Teresa Noewer.

JCU completed the night by dropping a 26-24 25-14 25-23 decision to Alma.

The Blue Streaks play two more matches Saturday to finish play at the Capital Invitational.
