JCU Volleyball Shakes Off Heartbreaker Losses On Friday To Sweep Its Saturday Set At Marcia French Tourney

Sarah Orlandi had a team-high nine kills as JCU turned its fortunes around in a win over Franklin & Marshall
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 A team with just one win to show for all its efforts in the first seven matches this season, with the most recent pair of setbacks especially galling, could have given in to a growing sense of despair.

The young John Carroll Blue Streaks had a different mindset altogether.

First year head coach Laura Jensen has preached all along to trust the process, and that mantra appeared to take root on day two of the Marcia French Invitational Saturday at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.

Box Scores:  vs. Case  vs. Franciscan  vs. Franklin & Marshall  vs. Baldwin Wallace

JCU lost two marathon matches on Friday at Case Reserve in Cleveland. Despite winning game four by a dramatic 27-25 count, the Streaks fell 15-9 in the deciding frame to the host Spartans in their first match. Sarah Slagle had 15 kills in the match

Then, after falling behind two games to none against Franciscan, John Carroll won sets three (25-10) and four (25-16) to force a fifth.

However, an eerily similar fate awaited as the Streaks were on the short end of another 15-9 score. Teresa Noewer slammed ten kills and Sara Kaminski produced 25 digs for JCU in the loss.

A new day and venue brought a new opportunity, and John Carroll was up for the challenge. A closely fought match with Franklin & Marshall resulted in a 25-23, 29-27, 25-21 win for the Blue Streaks in the morning. Sarah Orlandi led all Streaks with nine kills, while Jessica Kodrich had 26 assists.

Later in the afternoon, the crew from University Heights got the best of the Saturday hosts from Berea, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19. A 42-assist effor from Kodrich paced an offense were Slagle (13) and Noewer (12) each reached double digit totals in kills.

The win over Baldwin Wallace evened John Carroll's record for the weekend at 2-2. Noewer represented JCU on the Marcia French all-tournament team.

By splitting their four matches, the Blue Streaks now stand at 3-6 on the year.
