Blue Streaks Survive The Cold To Knock Off Crosstown Rivals With Second Half Goal

| By:
Genny Gorgen and the Blue Streaks earned a hard fought 1-0 win over Baldwin Wallace to climb into a second place tie in the OAC
Box Score After a cold night in University Heights, the John Carroll University stayed red hot as it defeated crosstown rival Baldwin-Wallace University by a 1-0 score.

The Blue Streaks are now on a four game win streak after an 0-2 start in league play, and also celebrated a fourth consecutive shutout.

Both teams left the first half at Shula Stadium without a goal to their credit due to strong defensive play at both ends. John Carroll managed nine shots with Baldwin-Wallace firing eight.

It was not until a newcomer to the series made the big play of the night.

Freshman midfielder Preston Mendel broke out of a pack following a turnover in the Yellow Jacket' end, and busted to the ten yard line to meet Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Emily Tallmadge. Unimpeded on the breakaway, Mendel connected on her second -- and arguably most important -- goal of the 2013 season at the 57:15 mark.

When asked later about the game-changing moment, all Mendel could muster was she felt was "phenomenal."

Haley McDonald made seven saves for her third consecutive complete match shutout.

With the win, JCU is now 6-0-2 in its last eight matches with Baldwin Wallace. The Blue and Gold has not lost to the Yellow Jackets since 2006.

The Blue Streaks, along with the Yellow Jackets, both entered tonight's match on three game win streaks in Ohio Athletic Conference play. Tonight's outcome had a dramatic impact on the OAc race, as both teams, along with Mount Union (who JCU beat last week by the de ja vu score of 1-0), Otterbein and Capital, are locked in a five-way tie for second place -- one game behind Ohio Northern which sports a 5-1 league record..

The same Ohio Northern team which John Caroll gets to host Friday night.

"We have to play every minute of the game," Mendel said, "We have to play as strong as we can and capitalize on every opportunity to go against Ohio Northern on Friday."

The Blue Streaks improves 7-6-3 overall and 4-2 in the OAC as Baldwin Wallace falls 13-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

John Carroll hosts Ohio Northern University this Friday, Oct. 25 at 7pm.
