Blue & Gold Throw Multiple Counter Punches To Run Win Streak To Eight

Ashlee Unrue's home run in the sixth inning of game two helped JCU sweep Baldwin Wallace

Baldwin Wallace earned the upper hand several times during JCU softball's Senior Day at Bracken Field, but the Blue Streaks had definitive responses to every Yellow Jacket jab, sweeping BW, 5-3 and 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.

Aided by a pair of BW errors, John Carroll got two runs on the board in the second inning to open the day's scoring.  Beckie Reid and Morgan Robinson scored the unearned runs for the 2-0 lead.

The score remained unchanged while Rachel Byrnes took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.  Unfortunately for the home team, the Yellow Jackets recorded three runs and two hits in the fifth to pull ahead.

The Blue & Gold's response would be immediate.

Mackenzie Griffin, who was honored prior to game one as JCU's lone senior player, delivered an RBI single to tie the game.  One batter later, Ally Kleinhans sent a Tabitha Murray pitch over the left field fence for a two-run blast to put the home team up 5-3.

Byrnes (18-1) then closed out the contest, before returning to pitch a complete game in the later affair.

BW benefited from two Blue Streak errors to grab a 3-0 advantage in game two, scoring three runs between the second and third innings.  And again, John Carroll stormed back to match the three runs behind back-to-back RBI doubles from Kleinhans and Robinson.

After two more scoreless innings, Ashlee Unrue brought the home crowd to its feet with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Her foot touching home plate represented the winning run, as Byrnes finished off the Yellow Jackets in the seventh.

With the wins, John Carroll (24-8, 13-3 OAC) stayed within striking distance of first place Capital University (28-8, 14-2 OAC) with two conference games left to play.  Capital must stumble at least once against Otterbein on April 27 for the Blue Streaks to earn a share of the OAC regular season title and play host to the OAC tournament.
