Mike Minjock Soars To Second In Nation With School Record Long Jump At 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Championships

Minjock flew 7.61 meters on his first jump of the final round at UW-La Crosse
One year ago, JCU long jumper Mike Minjock put himself in the national Top 3 with a 7.51 meter jump at the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Claremont, California.

On Thursday, he went above and beyond, literally, flying 7.61 meters (24-11.75) to place second in the country at the 2013 national outdoor meet, held this year at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  The jump, which was the first of his six tries, broke the aformentioned John Carroll record (7.51 meters).

Thursday's Results

After reaching the finals, Minjock wasted no time uncorking the best leap of his Blue Streak career.  He followed up with jumps of 6.93, 7.19, 7.14, and 7.22 meters, before a foul on his last attempt.

The eight team points achieved in the event leave the JCU men tied for seventh place out of 21 teams after one day of competition.

With the runner-up finish, Minjock earned the second outdoor All-America distinction of his career, to go along with a 2012 indoor track & field All-America award.

Competing for the Blue Streaks in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase on Thursday was sophomore Emily Mapes, who ran a 10:42.69 to advance to Saturday's finals.  Her prelimary time placed her fifth in the event.

A 2012 steeplechase All-American, Mapes will battle the rest of the field Saturday at 1:45 p.m.
