Kay Akerly (#15) found the back of the net for the first time in 2013 against Centre for what proved to be the game-winning goal
Box Score The John Carroll women's soccer team had a lot to prove in their non-conference game at home against Centre College from Kentucky.
The Colonels has an impressive record of 4-1 coming into the match, had been ranked as high as #16 in the nation this season, and were currently ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region according to the most recent NSCAA poll released September 10.
With their leading scorer from last season finding her shot, the Blue Streaks made a big statement when they came out as 1-0 victors after a grueling back and forth defensive battle Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.
The host squad had an inauspicious start to the opening half. About 15 minutes into the match, there was a foul in the John Carroll goal box, resulting in a yellow card for John Carroll's
Genny Goergen. Liz Miller took the ensuing penalty kick for Centre College against goalkeeper
Nicole Grys. Miller's shot did not find its intended target, however, as it clanged off the right post, leaving the score at 0-0.
As it turned out, John Carroll would score the lone goal of the match a few minutes later. Gathering a loose ball near midfield, freshman
Kyla Sofo sent the ball up to her teammate
Kay Akerly, who was moving toward the top of the goal box. The 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Forward of the Year wasted no time in maneuvering the ball past the Colonels defenders and rocketed the ball from the left side, burying the shot to give JCU a 1-0 lead.
This was Akerly's first goal of the season and Sofo's first assist of the year and her collegiate career.
For the duration of the first half, the Blue Streaks and Colonels battled it out, closing out the first half with a 1-0 score.
Starting off the second half of the game, Centre came out more aggressively, taking three shots during the first ten minutes of the half. Grys and the John Carroll defense did a great job of defending their territory, not allowing any Centre goals.
As the clock counted down, the Colonels brought all their energy and pressured John Carroll's defense. Centre fired five out of their 17 total shots at the John Carroll net in the last six-and-a-half minutes. However, Grys recorded four saves in the waning minutes to preserve the shutout and the victory. Gryz made a total of nine saves in the match.
With the win, John Carroll advanced to 2-3-1 while Centre College dropped to 4-2.
