Byrnes Four-Hit Shutout Helps JCU Softball Split First "Northern" Doubleheader of 2014

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 John Carroll scored just once all day in its first "northern" doubleheader of 2014, yet still managed a split Friday against host Ohio Wesleyan.

Behind a four-hit shutout by Rachel Byrnes, the Blue Streaks won the opener, 1-0. Ohio Wesleyan gained the split with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.

Byrnes was magnificent in the first game. After giving up four hits in her first two-plu innings, Byrnes allowed zero hits in her last four, retiring the final 15 batters she faced.

In the meantime, Sam Becker scored Colleen Brady with a two-out single in the top of the fifth for the lone run of the contest.

Both teams had four hits in the first game.

Byrnes, who improved to 3-2 on thr year, is now 22-10 in her career and is four strikeouts shy of 200.

In the second game, Ohio Wesleyan came up with two runs in the bottom of the first for all the runs it would need in a 3-0 triumph. JCU was again held to four hits, but could not give run support to Brianna Lach and Gina Tosti, who allowe a combined three runs on five hits.

After the split, John Caroll is 5-5 on the year.
