Box Score Two teams very familiar with each other having competed in the same tournament in each of the past two weekends finally squared off on Wednesday night.

Case Western Reserve (8-4) prevailed in a tight match sweeping the John Carroll University volleyball team (9-2) 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 inside the Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio. The loss snapped JCU's win streak at seven.

The two teams both competed in the 16th Annual Marcia French Invitational and the John Carroll Invitational but had yet to square off this year.

John Carroll struggled out of the gate falling behind 9-0 but was able to bounce back. Down two at 20-22 in the first set Sarah Orlandi tied the frame with a kill and an ace. Two points later Sydney Slater re-tied the stanza at 23, but a quick kill and ace from Katie Best gave the first set to the Spartans.

The Blue and Gold led for most of the second set but were unable to close out the frame. CWRU rode Best and Marian Barton for a 5-0 run to end the frame after a Julianne McGervey kill had given the Blue and Gold a 22-20 lead.

The Spartans never trailed in the third set. Down six at 14-20 John Carroll made a 3-0 run to pull within striking distance after kills from Leah Switalski and Jessica Kodrich. Sara Kaminski capped the run with an ace. CWRU's defense clamped down and prevented JCU from making a late-set run to take the match.

Orlandi paced JCU's hitters with eight kills while Slater and Kit O'Shaughnessy each had seven. Kaminski led the defense with a match-high 18 digs.

John Carroll will be back in action at the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational this weekend. JCU opens play against Buffalo State at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Streaks will also face Pitt-Greensburg (6 p.m., Friday), Carnegie Mellon (noon, Saturday) and Scranton (4 p.m., Saturday).
