Maria Ploplis and the Blue Streak defense recorded their second consecutive home shutout
Box Score It was a rare combination of luck, skill and history that propelled John Carroll women's soccer to a 2-0 win over the College of Wooster Tuesday night at Don Shula Stadium.
JCU came into the contest looking to build upon a three-match win streak against a tough College of Wooster side, which had just put Geneva College through the ringer last Saturday with a convincing 5-0 victory.
Almost immediately, the Blue Streaks found they had luck on their side. Looking to get an early boost of momentum, senior
Kay Akerly led a charge down the wing. When she got to the right hand side of the Wooster eighteen yard box, she attempted to find teammate
Danielle Sharbaugh down the middle, but Wooster's Rachel Davis redirected the cross at the last second. Fortunately for John Carroll and unfortunately for the Fighting Scots, the redirect found the back of the Wooster net for a 1-0 John Carroll advantage five minutes in.
Wooster was not going to be silenced, however, as the Fighting Scots dominated possession and the scoring chances for most of the rest of the half. Immediately after the goal, Katherine Tuttle made a brilliant individual run and almost managed to score the equalizer until a valiant effort by the Blue Streaks defense and keeper
Haley McDonald saved the day.
Later on, with 25 minutes gone, Wooster won a free kick just outside of the box but the opportunity was wasted as Tuttle sent the attempt soaring over the bar.
The second half was a different story as the Blue Streaks came out with some fire and the scoring chances started to flow. In the opening minutes, Akerly was sent thru, but was denied by the Fighting Scots goalkeeper Carly Eppler, making a tough save to her right hand side and low.
Eppler's challenge was not done as she had to make a decisive save in order to make the stop on a close in shot by JCU freshman
Justina Fortson.
In the 65th minute, history and skill intertwined as Akerly rewarded the Blue Streaks scoring efforts with a wonder strike from 30 yards out. Akerly hooked the ball to the far corner of the net as she prowled around the far left hand side of the box.
The goal was Akerly's fifth of the year and the 32nd of her career, putting her in sole possession of second place all-time in JCU women's soccer history.
"I am very pleased with her growth as a player," said John Carroll head coach Mike Marich of his history-making forward. "I hope to see her continue her success, as anything she does to help this team will only benefit us down the road."
Ahead 2-0, the Blue Streaks continued to display its skill on defense over the final 25 minutes in order to preserve their well-deserved victory and their second consecutive home clean sheet.
"It was exciting to pick up the first goal of the game and that the defense was able to buckle down and hold an impressive College of Wooster side scoreless," said Marich, whose team improved to 5-2 and extended its winning streak to four in a row.
Wooster fell to 6-3 with the loss.
