Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Faced with a prime opportunity to knock off an opponent that dealt the John Carroll University volleyball team a heartbreaking 5-set loss last season, the "Streaky Streaks" were up for the task on Saturday afternoon.

Opening play on the second day of the Marcia French Memorial Invitational, the Blue Streaks (6-1) swept Hiram, who defeated JCU in 2013. The Blue and Gold would go on to notch a fourth-straight sweep over Wooster in the second match of the day.

Freshman Julianne McGervey was named to the All-Tournament team. The outside hitter averaged a team-best 3.67 kills per set. She turned in a .347 hitting percentage over the 2-day, 4-match tournament.

Match 1 – Hiram
In search of its first signature win of the 2014 season the Blue Streaks rallied with another drastic second set comeback to sweep Hiram 25-15, 28-26, 25-18.

McGervey led the way with 11 kills and four digs. The Blue and Gold received a combined 31 digs from junior Sara Kaminski and sophomore Kit O'Shaughnessy.

An ace by senior Jessica Kodrich put JCU up for good at 13-11 in the first set. The Terriers would not go quietly but three kills from sophomore outside hitter Leah Switalski and two from sophomore Alexa Webber kept JCU out in front. Three straight Hiram errors enabled JCU to pull ahead by eight at 22-14 before Switalski closed out the set.

Down five at 19-14 in the second set the Blue and Gold set to work rattling off three straight points. A kill from McGervey tied the score at 21. The freshman added kills for points 23 and 24 to bring JCU to set point. Hiram responded with two kills from Marissa Jay but a Switalski kill gave JCU the set at 28-26.

JCU never trailed in the third set and built a 7-point lead on Kodrich's third ace of the match. From there the Blue and Gold were able to keep Hiram at bay never allowing the Terriers to get more than two points in a row.

Match 2 – Wooster
Continuing its strong start, John Carroll made quick work of Wooster with a 1:13 win courtesy of a 25-19, 26-24, 25-16 sweep.

Again emptying her bench third-year head coach Laura Rodeffer had a balanced offensive attack with five players recording six or more kills led by Sarah Orlandi's eight. Defensively the Blue and Gold were led by Natalie May's nine digs.

Alex Ehrett and Maddie McDowell put JCU up three at 21-18 after back-to-back kills. The Fighting Scots had tied the score at 18 after two JCU attack errors. JCU closed the set with kills from Ehrett and Switalski.

The Blue Streaks raced out to a 10-2 lead in the second set after a block from Orlandi and Sydney Slater. However, JCU would need yet another late second set rally to keep the hopes of the sweep intact. Down 24-23 JCU was able to tie the set at 24 on an attack error from Ksenia Klue. The Blue and Gold rebounded with an Orlandi kill and one of Katie Cosker's match-high four service aces.
John Carroll opens the home portion of its schedule with a 7 p.m. midweek match against Denison on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
