The memorable run of the John Carroll men's tennis team came to an end on a hazy late spring afternoon in Gambier, Ohio.
The host and ninth ranked Kenyon College Lords dispatched of the Blue Streaks without allowing a single victory as JCU fell by a 5-0 score.
Box ScoreJCU, coming off a historic first NCAA tournament win Friday over Franciscan, knew it would be a large step up against a perennial national power Saturday. That evident in doubles play, where John Carroll suffered quick defeats at the #1 and #2 spots.
Only the third doubles match offered intrigue. Nick Ciciliano and
Alex Guthrie battled frpom behind for the entirety of the match, and ultimately forced a tiebreaker after regulation play ended in an 8-8 tie.
In a tense breaker, Weston Noall and Peter Hazlett outlasted the JCU duo by a score of 13-11.
Down 3-0 after doubles play, JCU faced the daunting task of winning five singles matches in order to continue its stay in the NCAA Tournament. But the top two singles players for Kenyon closed out the match with straight set wins.
The Blue Streaks ended the season with a record of 12-12 overall and a second round appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships.
