John Carroll University, fresh off a national quarterfinal appearance, has been tabbed 14th in the annual
Sporting News preseason Division III poll.
In its annual college football preview magazine,
TSN picked JCU's Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union first, Linfield (OR) second, and defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater third. Washington & Jefferson was picked fourth while Mary Hardin Baylor rounded out the top five.
In addition to the preseason rating, head coach
Tom Arth and the Blue Streaks got additional praise with the selection of senior offensive lineman
Anthony Latina to the
TSN All-America team.
Latina, a two-year starter and letterwinner, was a second team D3football.com All-America selection in 2014. Latina became JCU's first All-American offensive lineman since Devin Martin in 2011.
Â
A first team All-OAC pick as well as an All-North region selection, Latina paved the way for one of the best offenses in the nation. Spending time between guard and tackle, Latina proved to be effective in both pass and rush blocking. He was part of an offensive line that helped
Tommy Michals set the single-season rushing total at John Carroll with 1,448 yards. Michals would also tie the 64-year-old JCU record with 20 rushing touchdowns.
John Carroll went 11-2 overall and 8-1 (2nd place) in the OAC in 2014, defeating Centre and Wheaton in the NCAA playoffs to reach the national quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
