John Carroll had all bases covered as far as Northeast Ohio was concerned for the true start of the indoor track & field season.
Two Blue Streaks competed at the unscored Youngstown State Indoor Invite Friday night, and both placed fifth in their respective events in the Division I dominated meet. In the 1-mile run,
Matt Andrews finished fifth out of 30 runners, clocking in at 4:20.86 and finishing ahead of runners from the likes of Pittsburgh, Slipper Rock and Indiana (PA).
Patrick O'Brien was fifth out of 46 competitors in his event, the 5000-meter run. O'Brien shattered the school record by finishing the race in 14:58.75, besting Will Rial's mark of 15:09 set in 2014. O'Brien was the only Division III competitor to finish under 15 minutes -- the others being from Pitt, Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky.

Host Mount Union won the meet with 171 points, followed by Ohio Northern (150), Baldwin Wallace (91), John Carroll (85) and Heidelberg (76).
Complete ResultsAdam North posted a victory for the Blue Streaks in the long jump, clearing a distance of 6.57 meters (21-06 3/4). He finished .24 meters ahead of the next closest competitor. Â Two other Blue Streaks scored in the event, as
Cole Weirich was fourth (6.26 meters / 20-06 1/2) and Nicholas Woods claimed fifth (6.17 meters / 20-03).
John Carroll was also impressive in the relays, as the Blue Streaks racked up 18 points alone in those two events.
In the evening closing 4 x 400 relay, the quartet of Woods,
Austin McIlvaine,
Michael Hydzik, and
Will Cameron won the race in 3:29.21. Â JCU also posted a second place finish in the Distance Medley, as Hydzik, Cameron,
Dan Loya and
Matt Andrews (after his efforts at YSU) ran the race in 10:39.60.
In the track events, JCU stocked away points in the 60-meter hurdles as John Innetta was second (8.90) and
Max Wasielewski was fifth (9.40).
The 500-meter run was a point scoring haul for John Carroll as well. Cameron, Hydzik, Innetta and Woods all finished in the top six. Cameron ran the race in 1:07.31, just .11 out of first place.
The Blue Streaks also received a major boost from its mile runners, as
Ryan Scanlon was fourth (4:31.99),
Elliot Thorkelson was fifth (4:33.82) and
Corey Large was sixth (4:38.31). Scanlon also finished second in the 800-meter run (2:01.43).
Luke Cancilla was a point scorer for the Blue Streaks in the 1000-meter run with his sixth-place finish (2:43.99). In the 3000-meter run,
Andrew Snyder finished fifth in 9:03.36.
Tyler Jew was a point scorer for JCU in the triple jump, placing fourth (11.26 meters / 36-11 1/2).
