Blue Streaks Dig Deep To Down Battling Bishops For First Time In Five Seasons

Box Score Part of the John Carroll men's tennis resurgence in recent years has been to increase the quality of its non-conference schedule.

The noticeable payoff is when the Blue Streaks start beating quality teams, like they did today.

In a match moved indoors to the Cleveland State University Malaga Tennis Center, John Carrolle dged Ohio Wesleyan University, 5-4, marking the Blue Streaks first win over the Battling Bishops since 20011. JCU had lost the three previous meetings by a combined score of 21-6

Box Score

The match began well for John Carroll as it won two of the three doubles matches. Jad Abdul-Aal and David Sinense were impressive in dispatching the duo of Shouta Fukamachi and Jakraraj Rungaseng by an 8-2 score. The Battling Bishops #1 doubles tandem was a second team All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection in 2014-15.

Also winning was Dillon O'Brien and Scott Adsit by an 8-3 score at #2 doubles.

JCU needed a split in singles play, and that is exactly what they got. Abdul-Aal won at #1 singles in straight sets, as did Tyler Cole at #5.

With the Blue Streaks having lost one match and trailing in two others, one more point was in need of securing in case other matches could not be rescued. Sinense grabbed hold of the clinching point with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Elliot Garwood.

The victory improved John Carroll's overall mark to 3-6, while the Battling Bishops fell to 6-6. It was Ohio Wesleyan's first loss to an Ohio Athletic Conference school this season after beating Capital (8-1), Mount Union (9-0) and Ohio Northern (9-0).
