John Carroll University football will be traveling to Barcelona, Spain for a nine-day trip from May 22-30 that features a matchup with a group of Spanish all-stars.
The Blue Streaks will take on the
Catalan All-Stars in an exhibition game in Barcelona on Saturday, May 27 at 12 p.m. local time (6 a.m. EST).
The trip, organized by Global Football, marks the ninth time that John Carroll has traveled to Europe.
The Blue and Gold have also visited Berlin, Germany (1994); Barcelona, Spain (1997); Rome, Italy (2000);
Wicklow, Ireland (2004); Switzerland (2007); Paris, France (2010); Dublin, Ireland (2012); and Greece & Italy (2014). The 2012 contest against St. Norbert College in Dublin was the lone regular season game played by JCU in Europe.
This is the first trip to Europe as the head coach of John Carroll for
Rick Finotti.
"It is an honor and a privilege to represent John Carroll University in our trip to Spain," said Finotti. "The John Carroll football program has a long history serving as ambassadors for football to the world."
"To have our student-athletes be exposed to other cultures is an incredible educational opportunity," he continued. "We want to thank Global Football for organizing this opportunity to experience all that Spain has to offer."
While in Spain, the Blue Streaks will visit various sites in Barcelona and Sitges. On Wednesday, May 24, JCU coaches and players will take a Barcelona sightseeing tour, headlined by a St. Ignatius of Loyola walking tour. The next day, the team will travel to the Cave of St. Ignatius in Manresa, where they will experience the site where the founder of the Jesuits began his spiritual journey.
On Friday, the Blue Streaks will visit Camp Nou stadium, the home of FC Barcelona, for a tour and museum visit.
Saturday's game day features a matchup with the Catalan All-Stars, followed by photos and a gift exchange. The nine-day trip will conclude with visits to Sitges Beach and a Catamaran cruise in Cambrils.
Throughout the trip, Finotti and John Carroll football players will be providing a blog with pictures on JCUSports.com.
