Years Of Frustration Fall By The Wayside As JCU Crushes Ohio Northern In OAC Opener

Ben Rancilio
Yes, John Carroll defeated Ohio Northern two years ago to snap a long losing streak in the series.

But today's 180-119 victory by the Blue Streaks over the Polar Bears had a much more dominating feel.

Results

There were the 13 first place finishes in 16 events. There were the dominating wins in key showdown events. There was the 61-point margin - John Carroll's largest over Ohio Northern since a 165-72 victory in 2001.

It all came together. Even after the Polar Bears won the opening relay.

From that point on, it was all John Carroll.

Notice was served in the 1000 Free, where Matt Pietsch (10:27.82) and Adam Bozsvai (10:53.56) went 1-2 to give the Blue Streaks a lead they would never relinquish.

Erik Sriubas was next up, and his day was just starting. He posted a win in the 200 Free with a time of 1:47.01, the first of his three wins.

Adam Lenz (1:00.75 in the 100 Breast), Ben Rancilio (2:00.96 in the 200 Fly) and Matt Ramsey (21.46 in the 50 Free) all followed with victories, giving JCU a 72-58 lead heading into diving.

Ryan McClelland continues his dominance of OAC diving, cruising to a win on the 1-meter board (277.10 points).

When swimming resumed, JCU did not miss a beat. Ramsey won the 50 Free in 47.98, as did Lenz in the 200 Breast (2:14.69). Sriubas and Pietsch combined to give the Blue Streaks a lethal 1-2 finish in the 500 Free.

Forrest Campbell followed with an impressive win in the 100 Fly (53.29).

McClelland concluded his sweep of diving by winning on the 3-meter board (273.65), and was joined on the podium by runner-up Jack Lausin (147.45) and third place finisher Evan McGory (140.50). That gave the Blue Streaks an insurmountable lead.

There were still finishing touches to be made. Sriubas posted his most impressive win of the day when he emphatically defeated 2018 OAC Swimmer of the Year Nolan Huey in his signature event, the 400 IM. Sriubas posted a time of 4:12.51, a full ten seconds ahead of Huey (4:23.22).

Putting the exclamation point on the win was the 200 Free Relay team of Lenz, Westin Fishel, Campbell and Ramsey. Their time of 1:27.44 was three seconds clear of the field.
