Box Score With just seconds remaining in regulation, the Blue Streaks held a one-goal lead. The visiting Yellow Jackets, who were at one point down 8-2 at the half, had scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to culminate an amazing comeback the battle of OAC unbeatens into extra time.
JCU needed one more stop.
Alas, the team with all the momentum prevailed, as the Yellow Jackets scored with two ticks left in regulation, that netted the game winner in the second overtime, to stun John Carroll, 12-11, at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday evening.
BW's Chad Steinwachs shared a game-high of three goals with fellow teammate Brock Riemenschneider, but Steinwachs' goal at the end of regulation pushed the game into overtime.
Tanner Roberts proved to be the deciding factor in the match, scoring BW's game-winning goal in the second overtime period.
With the loss, the Blue Streak suffer their first OAC loss of the season, and fall to 7-4 on the season slate. It also snapped a 16-game regular season winning streak, which will now stand as the standard bearer in the OAC.
Sophomore
Skyler Blake led JCU with a team-high of four points, being one of five Blue Streaks to collect two goals in the match.
At the start of the match, JCU held BW on the offensive end early at Don Shula Stadium.
Freshman
Brendan Whitty scored his 15th goal of the season 44 seconds into the game, starting the early scoring trend. The Blue Streaks were able to score back-to-back goals after a score by senior
Logan Calhoun, putting together a 2-0 lead with 10:57 in the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets ended JCU's brief scoring run as Riemenschneider responded to the two-goal lead with his 29th goal of the season for BW.
The Blue and Gold flashed a 4-0 run, aided by Blake's contribution of two goals, expanding JCU's third-largest lead of the night at 6-1 with 6:58 remaining in the second quarter.
Baldwin Wallace answered less than a minute later, adding the ultimately final score of the half for the visitor. The Blue Streaks, with the advantage, road an 8-2 lead into the halftime period.
It was a offensive-powered start to the third quarter for the Blue and Gold, as JCU gained their largest lead of the night at 10-3, with goals by senior's
Colin Corcoran and
Collin Rice 5:39 seconds into the second half.
Then, the aforementioned tide began to turn.
With 8:01 remaining in the third quarter, the game shifted gears in the Yellow Jackets favor. BW then caught fire, scoring seven out of the last eight goals in the match's regulation.
JCU hung onto a one-goal lead through the final 5:08 of the fourth quarter.
The Yellow Jackets ultimately stung the life out of the Blue Streaks, scoring an incredible game-tying goal with just two seconds remaining in regulation sending the game into overtime, finishing regulation on a 6-0 run.
The first four-minute overtime period showed defensive stands for both competitors, as a second period of play would be necessary. JCU had four shots but could not regain the touch it had early on in the contest.
Roberts scored the game winner, his sixth goal of the season, just 25 seconds into the second overtime period.
The Blue Streaks will now travel to New Concord, Ohio on Saturday to face the Fighting Muskies of Muskingum in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
