Game-Winner By Capital In Final Minute Ends Historic Season For JCU Women's Lacrosse

Box Score Capital's Kathryn Walton notched a goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation to push the Crusaders to a 12-11 semifinal round victory over the host John Carroll Blue Streaks in the 2018 OAC tournament, ending JCU's historic season Tuesday night at Don Shula Stadium.

The Blue Streak women's lacrosse team came into the annual tournament as the No. 2 seed, hosting a tournament game for just the second time in its four-year history. But tonight's loss prevented the Blue Streaks' attempt to reach the OAC Championship game for the first time.

The Crusaders avenged an early season overtime loss at the hands of the Blue Streaks -- by the exact same score of 12-11 -- and did so behind Regan Hannod's game-high six points.

For JCU, the senior duo of Grace Curatolo and Meghan Harte combined for eight points, each having a share of the team-high four points. Harte notched three goals and an assists, while Curatolo scored four of the Blue & Gold's 11 points.

The first half of the matchup featured both teams trading scores until the break. The Blue Streaks were not able to find a share of the lead in the opening half, however they did tie the game up on four different occasions throughout the first thirty minutes of competition.

Twice the Crusaders found themselves clinging onto a two goal lead at the 25:43 and 5:43 marks, but JCU refused to allow Capital to hang onto the advantage going into the break.

Curatolo netted three of her four goals of the evening in the first thirty minutes, scoring the most notable with 12.3 seconds remaining in the first half, drawing a 7-7 match at the intermission.

JCU and Capital were evenly matched in ground balls in the first half, with each team gathering 13 apiece. The Blue and Gold did hold the upper hand in draw controls, holding a 11-4 lead in that category.

Less than five minutes into the second half, the Blue Streaks captured their first lead of the night courtesy of a goal by sophomore Colleen Grombala.

The lead was short lived, as the Crusaders countered 4:33 later, tying the game back up for the fifth time with the score reflecting 8-8.

At one point late, Capital led 11-9, but JCU staged a ferocious rally. Curatolo tied the match up once again with 1:54 remaining, before the Crusaders had the last to say.

After Walton put Capital ahead 12-11, John Carroll had one last chance but could not get a clean shot off in the waning seconds to net the equalizer.

Statistics between the two were fairly similar, with an evenly matched contest in nearly all categories. Capital held the advantage in ground balls, gathering 26 compared to JCU's 23. They also led in clears with 17 successful clear attempts opposed to the Blue Streaks 13. The Blue and Gold won draw controls 15-10.

Sophomore Elyssa Zablo started and finished the night in goal, leading the way with seven saves.

JCU concludes the season with 14 wins, the most in a single season for the four-year program.
