Box Score What a difference a day can make. Both outcomes the same: wins.
The result? Undefeated season still intact.
Â
Yesterday, the John Carroll University men's basketball team was outscored 18-6 to start the second half. This afternoon against Olivet, the Blue and Gold blitzed the Comets 20-7 to open the final stanza.
Â
"It got the momentum going for us for the first time in the game,"
Ryan Berger said after the game. "We didn't have the best first half but it got us in a good flow early."
Â
Today's second half effort secured an 87-72 Blue Streaks win. JCU improves to 5-0 this season, matching its 2017-18 five game pace. The Blue and Gold also defeated Kalamazoo and Olivet during their opening campaign two seasons ago.
Â
After a back-and-forth affair to open the game, a collection of Blue Streaks opened the first half up with a 9-2 run to capture the lead. From that point on, JCU never gave the lead back up.
Â
Jackson Sartain played a pivotal role in the Blue and Gold having the advantage at the break. He scored eight of his 17 first half points within the final four minutes of the first half.
Â
Sartain has scored 49 points in his last two games, inching his way to just seven three-point field goals away from shattering the all-time three-point field goal record at JCU.
Â
In the second half, it was none other than
Ryan Berger that anchored the charge for the Blue Streaks with the first seven points of the half.
Â
"My mindset was just keep attacking them and execute better on the offensive end," he said. "It allowed us to get better looks and move the ball efficiently."
Â
Berger scored 18 points, his first game of the 2019-20 season he did not eclipse 20 points.
Â
The Blue and Gold took advantage of Olivet fouls, scoring five points at the line down the stretch to maintain a sizable lead.
Sean Flannery scored four points off made free throws as the Comets tried to dwindle down the lead with back-to-back threes.
Â
"We were getting into the lane and getting their defense out of position which led to fouling," Flannery said. "We were able to keep them on their heels and even when shots weren't falling, like they weren't today, we were still attacking and able to get to the free throw line which helped us get a win."
Â
Back-to-back threes by
Jimmy Berger and
Eric Hanna gave the Blue Streaks a 19-point lead with 5:41 left in the match.
Â
Guard
Jimmy Berger was crafty with the ball, as he registered eight assists. He was also instrumental on the defensive end with a team-high in rebounds (5), steals (5), and blocks (3).
Â
Fellow guard
Sean Flannery was key to the Blue Streaks win. He recorded seven assists, five rebounds, three steals, and zero turnovers.
Â
As a team, JCU only turned the ball over eight times. Olivet had 24 turnovers, orchestrating 21 points off those turnovers for the Blue and Gold.
Â
"We are obviously happy to be 5-0 but there are so many things we can still improve on and excited to carry this momentum into OAC play," said
Ryan Berger.
Â
The Blue Streaks have two days of rest before they open up conference play against rival Mount Union on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
