UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- For the first time in 20 months, John Carroll University Wrestling enjoyed the pleasure of competing in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks hosted Lake Erie College on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition to open the 2021-22 campaign. No team scores were kept, as the teams wrestled on two mats.

Plenty of highlights were seen by the JCU faithful in attendance. But above all, it was great to see JCU Wrestling back at home.

Saturday's action featured seven nationally ranked wrestlers. One of JCU's ranked wrestlers, Jarrod Brezovec (3rd at 141),  won by technical fall 15-0 in 4:27 over Jacob Donahue.

Luke Reicosky is another top dog who made his season debut, with a 1-1 record. He lost his first match, 3-2, against John Siemasz and won, 6-4, over Jacob Potok. Reicosky is ranked fourth at 165, but made his debut at 157 lbs.

The only matchup with two nationally ranked wrestlers was between Andrew Perelka (3rd at 125) and Corey Gamet (13th at 125). The two met at 133 and Gamet earned a 6-4 decision.

Kale Buckiso and Patrick McGraw both lost by identical scores of 4-3 against nationally ranked opponents. Buckiso lost to No. 12 ranked Sean O'Hearon at 149 lbs and McGraw lost to No. 9 ranked James Penfold at 165 lbs. Jesse Kantazar lost to returning All-American and No. 6 ranked Chris Droege by a score of 10-5 at 197.

Perhaps the most exciting match of the day was at 184 lbs. Brody Arrundale won a 12-minute match over Brylan Clouse. After they ended regulation at 1-1, no points were scored in the 2-minute overtime. Both wrestlers scored escapes in the 30-second rideout periods, sending the match into another 1-minute overtime. After going scoreless again, they went to a second round of 30 second rideout periods. Both wrestlers escaped again, but Arrundale won on criteria based on having accumulated more riding time.

Americo Milani (141), Ryan Forrest (149), and Daniel Devera (174) had their first wins as Blue Streak wrestlers.

"This was the perfect way to start the season," said Head Coach Mark Hawald. "Without team scores or individual placement, the focus was purely on the way we wrestled and not necessarily the results. Our guys had 1-2 matches against tough competition and now we have some data to use to plan training for our first tournament competition next week."

The Blue Streaks will be back in action at the Trine Invitational next weekend.

John Carroll's next home event will be a dual vs. Otterbein on November 16. The match represents the Ohio Athletic Conference opener, which will be Youth Night for JCU Wrestling.
