Men's Lacrosse Cages Cardinals in Road OAC Victory

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In the third game of a 3-game road swing, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse notched a nice win.

The Blue Streaks dominated from start to finish, utilizing a 14-1 run to defeat Otterbein on the road on Wednesday, 18-5.

John Carroll advances to 8-1 overall, including 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Cardinals scored the first goal of the game, netting the tally just 40 seconds into the contest. The Blue Streaks would control the tempo from there, keeping Otterbein off the board until the 1:21 mark of the second quarter.

Matt Berdysiak opened the scoring for JCU off a Cullen Zarek pass. Ian Flynn and Carter Pavain followed with unassisted goals, pushing the Blue Streak advantage to 3-1 after the first quarter.

John Carroll really got going on offense in the second quarter. Kevin Hack took a Brendan Whitty pass for the first strike, followed by a Flynn gino from a Jared Gorenflo assist. Berdysiak found twine off a Hack assist, and then Hack set up Gorenflo for a 7-1 lead. Otterbein got a goal at long last at 1:21, but Hack fired a goal off a Morgan Morrell pass to send the team into the locker room happy with an 8-2 lead.

The Blue Streaks netted the first six goals of the third quarter. Gorenflo started the action off a Whitty assist, and then the script flipped with Whitty finding twine and Gorenflo getting the apple. Tanner Gill-Snow then got onto the stat sheet, finding an open Berdysiak for a goal, 11-2.

Whitty then scored back-to-back goals, getting helpers from Morrell and Berdysiak. Gorenflo took an Ian Flynn assist home, setting JCU ahead, 14-2.

Otterbein scored their lone goal of the period at 2:32, and it only took just over a minute for Morrell to find Chandler Bankey for the answer. Entering the fourth, John Carroll possessed an insurmountable 15-3 lead.

Flynn scored unassisted, Hack tallied a man-up goal from Morrell, and Vinny Fiorella got home on a Zarek assist to close out the scoring at 18-5.

When the dust settled, five Blue Streaks clipped hat tricks: Gorenflo, Hack, Berdysiak, Whitty, and Flynn. Gorenflo and Hack tied for the lead with 5 points.

Cam Cecere dominated at X, winning 12-of-18 faceoffs and notching 3 groundballs. Brendan Hein also helped with 4-of-6 faceoff wins and 3 groundballs. Jon Gaglio secured the win in cage, allowing just 5 goals and making 11 saves.

With the win in their backpocket, JCU will return home to face another Columbus foe, Capital. John Carroll will celebrate Senior Day at the conclusion of the game.
