Softball Shuts Out Comets in Key Home Sweep on Good Friday

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – John Carroll Softball was running on nothing but green lights.

Like an actual comet with trails of dust, dust was flying everywhere at Bracken Field as the Blue Streaks piled on the offense and kept Capital trailing at all times.

Two games up on the docket, two shutouts down in the scorebooks.

John Carroll snatched the opening game with a formidable 5-0 final score, before outdoing themselves by winning 6-0 in the closing game of the doubleheader.

The duo of victories pushes the Blue Streaks to 12-9-2 overall and 5-4-1 in OAC play, continuing their win streak over Capital to 4 games.

Game 1
Scoreless entering the bottom half of the third inning, Akron, OH native sophomore Alyssia Carmichael swung big for the Blue Streaks. Her single to left field brought in senior Kasyn Scarantine and advanced junior Gracie Bressoud to third base. 1-0

Senior Kristen Jesberger hit a sacrifice fly out to right bringing in Bressoud, thus concluding the initial offensive burst for the Blue Streaks. 2-0

The aforementioned trio of Blue Streaks would strike again later in the fifth inning, proving their order in the lineup to be advantageous for Head Coach Nicole Loudin. Jesberder doubled up the middle, soon advancing to third, while Carmichael and Bressoud both came in to score. 4-0

Freshman Kendall Trunzo did not leave her teammate on base for too long as she laid down an ideal bunt which opened the plate up for another Blue Streak score. 5-0

The shutout came thanks to the tandem of sophomore Danielle Orendi and junior Katie Debord. Orendi finished the day with 4.0 IP, allowing 1 hit, tallying 4 strikeouts and the win (5-2). DeBord finished with 3.0 IP, allowing 3 hits, with a strikeout of her own.

Game 2
Freshman Brianna Callow pitched to near perfection in game 2. The McDonald, OH righthander threw a complete game shutout, allowing 5 hits, 0 walks, and 8 strikeouts.

Trunzo touched home first for the Blue Streaks off a wild pitch in the second inning. 1-0

Lightning struck twice in the third inning when Jesberger hit a sacrifice fly bringing home Bressoud for the second time on the day in such a fashion, 2-0

The Blue Streaks kept their feet on the gas pedals entering the fourth. Pouring on 4 more runs to the score, bringing the offense to a close on the day. Runs came in thanks to:

Scarantine singled to center field. 3-0

Bressoud singled up and through the middle of her own. 4-0

Kaylyn Odelli doubled, launching over first base into right field. 5-0

Jesberger singled, threading the ball between the foul line and the Capital third baseman. 6-0

The Blue Streaks fired on all cylinders throughout the Friday double header, heating up the team entering the final four OAC matchups of the season.

Next time the bats will be swinging will come on the road in Ada, OH as the Blue & Gold travel out to Ohio Northern University on Monday April, 18.
