Women's Soccer Soars to Goal-Filled Conquest of Thiel

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS After a two-game losing streak, John Carroll Women's Soccer came out firing tonight.

The Blue Streaks tallied a season-high six goals in a dominant 6-1 victory over the Thiel College Tomcats on Wednesday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

Hungry for a victory, the Blue Streaks did not let down during this non-conference, unfamiliar matchup, as this is the first time in women's soccer history John Carroll has competed against Thiel College.

Wednesday night's matchup against the Tomcats started off with high intensity for the Blue Streaks. It began in the locker room for John Carroll.

"The locker room before was very energetic, we were very pumped up," said Emily Patrzyk.

This energy was noticeable when not even four minutes into the match, John Carroll's Alli Malinky capitalized on a pass from senior Grace Monnin. Malinky tucked the ball into the high left corner of the net, giving John Carroll a 1-0 lead.

With no response from the Tomcats, John Carroll continued this fast paced game with close, but missed shots by Emily Patrzyk (2), Lauren Gumeny (2), Grace Monnin (2), and Abby Smith

It was not until the 19th minute that freshman Emily Patrzyk was able to execute a goal, as she placed the ball in the lower left corner, following a beautiful, patient fake to increase John Carroll's lead to 2-0.

With a low left missed shot by John Carroll's Gabriella Walter and two Grace Monnin shots on goal, the Blue Streaks kept the momentum going to continue their lead.

In the 23rd minute, the Blue Streaks showed their team chemistry with an impressive pass to the center from Emily Patrzyk. The Twinsburg native placed her pass perfectly to Grace Monnin, and the veteran arched a shot into the high center of the net to up the lead to 3-0.

The Blue Streaks made an incredible play to put the ball in the net in the 23rd minute making John Carroll's lead 4-0. Grace Monnin took a shot against Thiel's goalie Samantha Hoffman, which was deflected off her hands and was headbutted into the back of the net by Morgan Gabriel

John Carroll's consistent attack yet again paid dividends following a saved low left shot from Julia Suttman that rebounded into the center. The rebound set up perfectly for Emily Patrzyk's second goal of the game in the 27th minute, as the freshman sent it home into the low right corner of the net. This goal gave John Carrol a nice cushion lead of 5-0.

In the last 8 minutes of the first half, the Blue Streaks did not give up their strong offensive attack totalling four more shots from Malinky (2), Claire Hollern, and Monnin. Thiel's goalie Samantha Hoffman recorded 10 saves after John Carroll had 15 shots on goal, whereas the Tomcats had 0.

The Blue Streaks ended the half out in front, 5-0. This has not been achieved by the Blue Streaks since October 12, 2013, when John Carroll beat Marietta 7-0.

"It was great to come off after playing a rough three games defending a lot, so it was great to start quickly and be able to get a couple goals ahead," said Coach Michael Marich

Entering the second half, the Thiel Tomcats knew they had to answer with an offensive attack. It took only a little more than two minutes for the Tomcats to have their first shot on goal, by Bailey Fritz, which was saved by John Carroll's goalie Juliana Kontul.

Shortly after that, at minute 48:10. The Tomcats were finally able to execute a goal, which was scored by junior Bailey Fritz on an indirect free kick that landed in the high left corner of the net. Despite the goal, the Blue Streaks were still at a good spot with a 5-1 lead.

The Blue Streaks answered back with a shot by sophomore Lizzie Woo in the high center of the net that was saved by Thiel's Samantha Hoffman.

The last goal of the game was scored off a free kick by John Carroll's freshman Kathryn Shaffer, her first of the game. It was a beautiful strike by youngster for the Blue Streaks, and secured the conquest by a 6-1 margin.

In doing so, the Blue Streaks secured their first home win of the 2022 season. An early offensive attack from the Blue Streaks proved to be one of the reasons for tonight's win.

This victory brings John Carroll's record to 2-2-2. The Blue Streaks will be back in action this Saturday, September 17, as they travel to Ohio Wesleyan.
