Women's Soccer Roars Past Raiders in Dominant Home Effort

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Every time John Carroll Women's Soccer has walked onto the pitch at Don Shula Stadium this season, there's been a sense of magic in the air.

This season has been the coming out party for the team's young players. Tonight, the Blue Streaks started two freshmen and five sophomores. Without a doubt, the team's youngsters enjoy playing on Wasmer Field.

The Blue Streaks revved up the scoring machine early in the match, and kept it rolling during a 4-0 victory. With the conquest, John Carroll is one match away from having a perfect regular season home record for the first time since 2000.

More importantly, the Blue Streaks remain atop the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 7-0-1 mark with just one match left on the schedule in the way of a conference regular season trophy.

John Carroll wasted little time in the offensive third. Off an early throw-in, Patrzyk collected the ball just outside the box, took a few touches to bring it just inside the box, and lofted a perfect shot over the keeper's outstretched arms.

Patrzyk's goal early in the fifth minute, on the game's first shot, certainly provided the hosts with the start they were seeking.

John Carroll continued to provide pressure on Mount Union's backline. The Blue Streaks poked and prodded at the Purple Raider defense until it caved again in the 20th minute. Julia Niehaus sent forward a ball from the back, which bounded by a Blue Streak and a Purple Raider. Madyson Rosado charged ahead at full speed as the ball bounced toward the Mount Union box. At the penalty arc, Rosado blasted a rocket top left corner.

Rosado's ninth goal of the campaign provided a perfect cushion at 2-0 in the 20th minute.

The start mirrored last year's match, as Rosado and Patrzyk scored the first two goals in a 3-0 win the last time the teams met in the OAC Tournament Semifinal last season.

The advantage did not stop the Blue Streaks from being aggressive. Michael Marich's side continued to push on offense, unsatisfied with two goals.

In the 27th minute, Rosado looked in perfect position to add to her goal total and march upwards in the OAC stat leaders. But her laser beam of a shot bounced off the crossbar, and out of harm's way.

Kathryn Shaffer also donked a shot off the crossbar in the 32nd minute on what looked to be a promising opportunity. But the chance went for naught.

With under a minute remaining, the Blue Streaks added to the lead in marvelous fashion. Shaffer fired a fantastic through ball over the Mount Union backline. Emma West caught up to it on the far side, and beat the keeper low left with 48 seconds left on the clock.
And so, the Blue Streaks strode into halftime with a commanding 3-0 advantage. JCU possessed a clear advantage in shots, 14-4, though a slighter 4-2 lead in shots on goal.

Early in the second half, Madeline Martin Kosier stood strong against a Mount Union chance. John Carroll responded with some opportunities, but nothing scary for the visitors.

Mount Union looked to get on the scoresheet several times as the half continued. But Kosier thwarted several opportunities, including a promising corner kick that she punched away in the 77th minute.

But the Blue Streaks were not done.

In the 88th minute, the Blue Streaks got an opportunity on a free kick. Abby Mortellaro stepped into the spotlight and did not give away her shot. The senior from Granville, Ohio fired a picture-perfect shot that bounced off the keeper's hands and met twine.

Mortellaro's first career goal set the final score at 4-0 Blue Streaks, tying the largest margin of victory in series history (since a 4-0 win on 10/24/2017). The all-time series now sits tied at 17-17-2, as JCU has now won three straight.

"Coach let me take the kick and it went in off the goalie's hands. It was an effort from everyone today, definitely not just me," said Mortellaro. "We're really excited about the position we're in. We just want to keep the energy high and not let go of that."

The Blue Streaks now stand at 11-1-4 overall on the season. John Carroll will welcome Muskingum (2-12-1, 0-7-1 in OAC play) to Shula Stadium on Saturday.
