Men's Basketball Headed to Oswego State to Open NCAA Tournament

| By:
The Blue Streaks are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time.
OSWEGO, N.Y. -- While the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament did not end in a John Carroll title, the team's time on the hardwood is far from over.

Even without the OAC tourney crown, the path to the NCAA Division III Basketball Championship was all but guaranteed due to the Blue Streaks' stellar 22-3 regular season record and OAC regular season title.

The Blue Streaks figured prior to the 2023 selection show that they would be in the tournament. But they weren't sure if the journey would start at home or away.

That answer came on Monday afternoon, as John Carroll learned it would be going to a pod hosted by Oswego State in New York to play in NCAA Tournament.

The Blue Streaks' opponent for the First Round of the NCAA Tournament will be Albertus Magnus this weekend, tentatively scheduled for 3:15 pm according to the bracket.

The winner of this first round game will be playing the winner of host Oswego State vs. Marymount (VA).

A look at the four teams in this "pod":

John Carroll
  • John Carroll owns a 22-4 record and is coached by Pete Moran, the 2023 OAC Coach of the Year, who is in his sixth year as the head coach.
  • The Blue Streaks last appeared in the tournament in 2018, when they reached the Round of 16.
  • The Blue Streaks have an all-time tournament record of 23-17.
  • JCU has reached the Round of 16 on seven occasions. The program's best finish was 3rd place in 2004.
  • John Carroll tied program records in the OAC era with a 22-3 regular season mark and a 16-2 OAC record.
Albertus Magnus
  • The Falcons entered with a 19-9 record and clinched their spot in the tournament with a 83-79 win over St. Joseph (Conn.) in the GNAC Tournament Championship Game
  • They are led by Graduate Forward Terry Dawkins who averaged 17.3 points per game this season.
  • Head coach Mitch Oliver commands this team for the 16th season. In the last 13 years, he has brought home seven GNAC Championships.
  • Albertus Magnus is coming off their biggest win of the year, as St. Joseph (Conn.) was ranked first in the country.
  • This is the Falcon's eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament
  • This will be the first ever matchup between Albertus Magnus and John Carroll
Oswego State
  • Oswego State will host the other three teams in this region following a 25-2 finish.
  • The Lakers won the SUNYAC Championship 74-63 over SUNY Brockport on Saturday, February 25.
  • Jeremiah Sparks, a junior, leads this team in scoring (16.3 ppg) and is second on the team in assists (94).
  • Head Coach Jason Leone is in his 11th season at Oswego and his team locked up the program's sixth SUNYAC Championship under his tenure.
  • This is the eighth tournament appearance for the Lakers.
Marymount (VA)
  • Marymount finished off the regular season with a 17-10 record.
  • The Saints recently took down Neumann University in the Atlantic East Championship on Saturday, 57-52.
  • This is the team's first Atlantic East Championship in 23 years.
  • The Saints are coached by Chris Rogers, who is in his 14th season as the Head Coach at Marymount.
  • Rogers brought the Saints to the Atlantic East Championship game in 2022, falling short to Neumann.
  • Marymount is led by Marcus Stubbs, who shoots 48% from the field, 44% from three point range, and averages 17 points per game.
