4x400 Relay Record Highlights Strong Weekend for Men's Track & Field

Fortunately for the Blue Streaks, John Carroll Men's Track & Field did not need to travel too far this weekend.

JCU's Sprints, Jumps, Distance athletes journeyed to nearby Ashland for the Jud Logan Light Giver Open at Ashland University. Meanwhile, JCU's Throwers and Jumpers headed to Alliance for the Jim Wuske Open at the University of Mount Union.

Here's what happened this weekend for the Blue Streaks.

Ashland's Jud Logan Light Giver Open
About a year ago, John Carroll shocked the world by breaking the NCAA Division III Distance Medley Relay record. Friday would not see that record fall, but the Blue Streaks still compiled an excellent time in the event to kick off the weekend.

Ethan Domitrovich, Garrett Clark, Caleb Correia, and Alex Phillip combined for a time of 9:50.33, setting both event and venue records.

Sticking with the distance runners, Tommy Naiman set event and venue records in the 5000m, winning the event with a time of 14:53.56. Joe Backus snagged sixth with a mark of 15:22.07.

In the triple jump, Corey Minton scored first with a hop of 14.03m, soaring to the top of the field while repping the Blue & Gold.

On Saturday, the 4x400 relay was the story. It was a combination of veterans and youth, with household names Garrett Clark and Caleb Correia teaming up with freshman phenoms Dustin Horner and Basheer Alramahi. The quartet not only set the school record but ascended to first in the country with a remarkable time of 3:14.82. That's a heck of a feat, and a sign of perhaps more incredible things to come for the Blue Streaks.

Max Grillo looked good in the 800m, as the freshman flashed for a time of 1:54.25 and a third-place finish. In the 400m, Tyler Gast clipped a time of 50.38 for 19th, while Victor Ononogbo snagged a time of 50.81 for 25th.

John Shoemaker earned 20th in a packed 3000m field, turning in a time of 8:45.08. Matt Costanzo also finished top 25 in 8:50.71.

On the field side of things, Daylen Glaze achieved a mark of 6.34m in the long jump, coming in 16th.

Mount Union's Jim Wuske Open
Zach Szafarski and Matthew Russo finished 10-11 in the weight throw with respective tosses of 14.90m and 14.66m. Noah Schroeder finished 15th at 13.65m and Alec Gorman tabbed 22nd at 12.50m.

In the shot put, Russo and Szafarski flipflopped, as Russo tossed to a distance of 14.17m for eighth, while Szafarski 13.95m earned ninth at 13.95m.
