Men's Lacrosse Steamrolls Lake Forest in NCAA Tournament First Round Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Following their seventh straight Ohio Athletic Conference title, the John Carroll Men's Lacrosse team looked to carry over their momentum into the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Lake Forest College.

The scoring came early and often for the Blue Streaks en route to a 23-2 victory over the Foresters.

The Blue Streaks notched their highest scoring NCAA Tournament game in program history while advancing to 15-2 overall on the season.

The Blue Streaks wasted no time setting the tone with a goal from Kevin Hack not even one minute into the game. Two minutes later, John Carroll's Max Cook rifled one past the Lake Forest goalie Andrew Widlar to put them up 2-0. The constant Blue Streak pressure resulted in two more goals in the next minute of play as the Blue Streaks showed zero signs of slowing down.

Following a successful clear attempt by the Blue Streaks, Hack earned his second goal of the game, which was set up by a phenomenal pass from Tanner Gill-Snow. The pristine team play led to a Morgan Morrell goal as well as a Matt Berdysiak tally, his 46th goal on the year.

Yet again, the Foresters' inability to successfully clear their zone resulted in a Gill-Snow goal to put the Blue Streaks up 8-0. One goal wasn't enough for Gill-Snow, as he scored his second of the game just a minute later.

John Carroll was able to cash in three more goals before the end of the first quarter to give them a resounding 11-0 lead. Lake Forest was able to muster just one shot on goal compared to John Carroll's 20.

The Foresters' first goal of the game occurred in the second quarter, courtesy of Ryan Dousevicz, as he became the first Forester to score a goal in an NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament game.

John Carroll's Ian Venard wasted no time getting the goal back with a couple of spin moves leading to a rocket to the top right corner of the net to bring the score to 12-1. Hack continued his career day midway through the second quarter as he secured his third goal of the game, his fourth on the season, as the Blue Streaks continued to pour it on offensively. The Blue and Gold were able to tack on one more before the half as they took a 14-1 lead into the break.

The second half brought much of the same. Cook began the scoring with his 11th goal of the year. Moments later, Conor Ryan scored his first goal of his storied Blue Streak career to put the Blue Streaks up 15.

Two more Blue Streak goals concluded the third quarter as they were well on their way to advancing.
Five more Blue Streaks goals and one from Lake Forest summed up the fourth quarter as John Carroll led from start to finish in a dominating 23-2 victory.

The Blue & Gold's dominance was in large part due to their ability to force turnovers, as Lake Forest finished with 29 turnovers compared to John Carroll's 21.  Meanwhile, ground balls were also in favor of the Blue Streaks, 49-25.

Next up, John Carroll will travel to Carlisle, PA on Saturday, May 13 at 12 pm to take on Dickinson College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

For the upcoming game against Dickinson, Head Coach Joe Rautenstrauch is looking for the experience of his players to lead the way.

"We have a lot of experience in the locker room, the guys are ready to go at it one more time," said the seventh-year coach. "We know the level of play we have to bring it Saturday, so we need to bring it for 60 minutes. We've been on the wrong side of it twice, so we're hoping to shock the world a little bit."
