Volleyball Secures Wins over Wilmington and Bluffton in Saturday Tri-Match

WILMINGTON, Ohio – John Carroll Volleyball journeyed down I-71 for two volleyball matches at Wilmington College, first against the host Quakers and the second against Bluffton College.

John Carroll tallied wins in both, building a 3-match winning streak to advance to 12-5 on the season.

The first contest vs. the Quakers was a 5-set thriller, as JCU eked out a win by set scores of 18-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 15-11.

John Carroll then made quicker work of Bluffton, prevailing with set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20.

JCU vs. Wilmington

The teams traded jabs in the opening stages of the match. Wilmington fired up a 5-point run to sneak ahead, 17-14. John Carroll threatened to get back into it, with Jennifer Follmer and Mary Kate Sheehan breaking the tide. But the Quakers managed to seal the deal in the closing stages, using a 5-point run to do it.

Wilmington kept the momentum going in the second set, scoring the first five points. But John Carroll came storming back, using a 7-point run to fire ahead, 11-9. Wilmington managed to get ahead later on with a 19-18 lead, but then the JCU offense came alive late. Natalie Glowe, Marissa Lynch, Sheehan, Jessica Liddle, and Follmer all chipped in kills as part of a 7-2 run to even things at one apiece.

The teams played evenly to start in the third set, though the hosts threatened to take control by virtue of a 16-10 lead and then to 19-13. But then Payton Miozzi caught fire, notching four aces in a row to narrow the gap. John Carroll then took the lead late at 24-23, but Wilmington tore off three straight points to steal the set.

Backs against the walls, the Blue Streaks got off to a tough start with a 10-5 deficit, but then tallied five in a row with Glowe notching a pair of kills. Follmer and Liddle then took turns hitting back-to-back kills. John Carroll ended the set on a 10-2 run, with Sheehan providing two of the final three kills.

The early goings of the tiebreaker set did not look good. The Quakers got out to a 9-7 start, but then John Carroll responded with a critical 6-0 run to race ahead, 13-9. While Wilmington narrowed the gap with two points, JCU finishing things out late with a Follmer kill to close out a 15-11 conquest.

Jennifer Follmer (12), Natalie Glowe (11), and Marissa Lynch (10) all hit double digits in kills. Maddie Maziarz led the way with 22 assists. Lexi MacDonald topped the team with 18 digs, followed by Glowe with 14 and Maziarz at 11.

JCU vs. Bluffton

The first set proved to be a back-and-forth affair, as neither team managed to build much of a lead. The teams stood deadlocked at 18 and then at 21. Bluffton snuck ahead by one, but then kills by Follmer, Lynch, and Liddle clinched the set at 25-22.

The second set opened up closely again. John Carroll constructed a 5-point lead, as Maddie Maziarz helped to lead the charge with some solid play. John Carroll finished things off well down the stretch, with Kallan Hrics and Glowe thundered kills in clutch fashion. The Blue Streaks rolled late in an 8-1 stretch to fire up a 25-16 win.

The Beavers got out to a hot start in the third set, 8-4. Bluffton continued to thrive with a 5-0 run to power the advantage to 17-8. Bluffton continued to push the lead, moving up to 23-15. But then the Blue Streaks found a different gear and nearly came all the way back, narrowing the deficit to just one at 24-23. But then the Beavers finally found the clinching point to stave off elimination.

The teams stood relatively close for a while in the fourth set, as JCU clung to a 16-15 lead. But then four different Blue Streaks tabbed kills for a 4-point run, and then provided strong play down the stretch. Kendra Dziubinski authored the winning kill at 25-20 to get the victory.

Mary Kate Sheehan helmed the offense, leading all players with 11 kills. Haley Nicholson notched a team-best 19 assists, followed by Maddie Maziarz with 16. Lexi MacDonald earned 19 digs, followed by Glowe with 13.
