Fouls Wound Women's Basketball in Road Loss at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE -- Despite a strong last push, John Carroll fell to Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Otterbein on the road tonight.

The Blue Streaks fell to the Cardinals on Wednesday evening, 80-68, in a close to the first half of OAC play.

Fighting off the bitter cold, the Blue Streaks traveled south to Westerville to take on the Cardinals of Otterbein University. Coming into the game 9-6 on the season 4-4 in conference play, John Carroll took on the OAC opponent on the road in a high-scoring match up.

The Cardinals won the tip, but JCU scored first thanks to a jump shot from Abigail Rosol, assisted by Maddie Pietrowski. The lead changed hands a couple times, but Otterbein started building, though JCU made sure to stick within striking distance. Bella Carcioppolo scored back to back layups, and a critical steal by Maddie Pietrowski led to a Halle Landies basket to end the Blue Streak scoring of the first quarter. The Cardinals stood ahead after the first, 19-12.

Carcioppolo started off the scoring in the second period with a driving layup. A few missed shots by JCU allowed Otterbein extend its lead to 9. Ava Ryncarz chipped away at that lead with a three-pointer, and Halle Landies made a jump shot in bright spots for JCU, but a few missed opportunities and a three-point play by Katie McCarey led to the Cardinals owning a 15-point lead going into halftime.

Carcioppolo started off the scoring for both teams coming back from the break. Pietrowski then provided some offense, with a free throw and two layups. Strong defense by the Blue Streaks, including a nice defensive rebound by Angela Vitantonio, led to a three-pointer by Ava Ryncarz. Two made foul shots by Carmen Heuker chipped further at the lead going deeper into the third quarter. Another Ryncarz basket brought the Blue Streaks back within 10. Two made free throws by Abigail Rosoi kept up the pace. The quarter ended on a buzzer beater jump shot for the Cardinals by Kyla Irby to make the score 54-43 Otterbein.

Great defense down low by Halle Landies with a defensive rebound allowed Rosol to score first in the last 10 minutes of regulation. Lock down defense and a strong inside presence helped the Streaks prevent Otterbein from scoring for the first two minutes of the quarter. Two more free throws for Ava Ryncarz put the Blue Streaks at 50 points for the night, and JCU was back at the line with Carmen Heuker making two more free throws. Katie Zatta came into the game and got hot, quickly producing some offense.

Zatta continued to make her presence felt down the stretch by scoring two more threes. Despite Zatta's strong final push, the Cardinals countered with enough offense of their own to finish ahead, 80-68.

Katie McCrary for Otterbein made her presence known with 23 points on the night. The leading scorer for JCU was Maddie Pietrowski with 13 points. Fouls and free throws played a major role in tonight's contest with a combined total of 47 fouls between the teams, with JCU committing a season-high 27. John Carroll went 19-for-27 at the line while Otterbein went 31-for-37.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action at home on Saturday, January 20 against Ohio Northern University at 2 pm. Stay tuned to see who will be featured on basketball card #2 of 10.
