Volleyball Clinches Home Game in OAC Tournament by Beating ONU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Both John Carroll and Ohio Northern had spots in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament locked up entering the conference finale. But that didn't mean nothing was on the line.

The winner would get to host a tournament game. Plus, momentum entering the postseason.

John Carroll got the victory, 3-1, in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, in a fitting way to celebrate Alumnae Day. Interestingly enough, the teams will meet again in the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal on Tuesday, November 12 at the DeCarlo Center.

The teams traded 4-point runs in the early going of the first set before settling into a 13-13 deadlock. Abby Bednar and Mary Kate Sheehan guided an offensive attack that held firm down the stretch. The teams galloped to a 24-24 tie before JCU finished off the set with two straight points, the first a Kendra Dziubinski kill and the second an ONU error.

Ohio Northern responded in just about the worst way possible for JCU, going on a 10-0 tear to start the set. While JCU did not surrender, the hosts never got within six. ONU rolled to a 25-17 set win, though this would be the high water mark for the visitors.

The third set started much better for JCU, to the tune of a 12-6 lead, with a 4-point run stretching it further. The result was not much in doubt, as JCU's offense found its footing and the defense played well, too.

For a moment, JCU seemed as if they might run away in the fourth, starting off 6-2, and then moving ahead further to 14-7. But methodically, ONU chipped away and continued battling, all the way to the slimmest 20-19 deficit. But from there, neither team could string together two points. A couple attack errors aided the JCU cause, and the Blue Streaks managed to get the job done, 25-23.

Abby Bednar helped to make it possible with 17 kills, many of them of a thunderous variety. Jessica Liddle also stood out with 13 kills. Tess Humphrey was cooking today, with 27 assists and a handful of surprise kills. Olivia Mogyordy helmed a defense that was quick, with a team-high 17 kills.

For a long while, ONU has been a very difficult team for John Carroll to beat. But Michele Benoit's crew departs the league having won three of the last four matches. But no doubt, the grudge match on November 12 will not be a cakewalk.

The Blue Streaks will have one more week of regular season play before the OAC Tournament begins. John Carroll heads to Case Western Reserve on Wednesday.
