Luke Chicone Crowned as Third All-American in JCU Men's Basketball History

Luke Chicone follows in the footsteps of John Columbo and Corey Shontz as an All-American.
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Luke Chicone has joined an exclusive club of John Carroll Men's Basketball student-athletes.

After already earning the Ohio Athletic Conference's Most Outstanding Player award, Chicone was named to the NABC Division III All-America Second Team.

Chicone is only the third Blue Streak in program history to earn All-American honors and the first since Corey Shontz in 2012. The first Blue Streak to do it was John Colombo in 1983.

Shontz was the first Blue Streak to win the OAC's Most Outstanding Player award. Just a couple years ago, the star guard was inducted into the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame as a first ballot selection.

While playing a stout schedule against several Division I teams as well as a Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) slate, Colombo was a first team All-PAC selection three times and averaged 21.1 points per game during his career. Colombo finished first in PAC history and second in JCU history in scoring.

Chicone put up serious numbers in his junior season. The Mentor native averaged 18.7 points and 5.2 assists per game. He ranked fourth in the OAC in points per game and second in assists. Both of those figures were up from his sophomore season. Chicone was also one of the best players in the country in terms of assist/turnover ratio (3.17).

His career assists per game average of 5.0 currently stands tops in JCU history. Additionally, he's just 20 points away from breaking 1,000 in his JCU career.

The Mentor native's defense was also very strong. The former Cardinal notched 65 steals, good for 2.24 per game, second in the conference and fourth in program history. His career average of 1.9 steals per game ranks fourth in the JCU record books.

After being named a preseason All-American, Chicone played all season under some high expectations. It's safe to say that Chicone delivered on those expectations and achieved one of the highest honors that any Division III student athlete could.

"Luke would be the first one to give the credit to his teammates," said Head Coach Pete Moran '08. "But what he won't say is how hard he works in the weight room and in the gym. He has elevated his game to a level which puts him up there with the JCU greats. Above all of achievements this year, I'm more proud of the young man he has become."
