Men’s Track & Field Excels In Their First Meet Weekend At Both Carnegie Mellon And Oberlin College

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania & OBERLIN, Ohio - The Blue Streaks had their first meet weekend of the 2024 outdoor track & field season at both the Carnegie Mellon Invitational and the Bob Kahn Invite at Oberlin College.

A small contingent of the distance athletes competed at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Friday. To kick things off, in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase, Jacob Gerhardt placed sixth, running 9:41.65, while earning a personal best in the event. Freshman Jack Curtis followed with an 11th place finish with a time of 10:09.16. 

In the men's 1500 meter run, the duo of Mike Hvizdos (3:59.36) and Caleb Correia (4:00.47) would each earn personal bests placing fifth and seventh respectively. Sophomore Ian Paul made his first appearance in the event, running 4:03.04 to earn a 12th place finish, followed by Liam Noss (4:06.03) and Jack Root (4:06.29) rounding up the top 20. 

The men's 5000 meter run did not disappoint as senior Ethan Domitrovich would pick up where he left off and win the event with a time of 14:35.04 to earn a personal best in the event. Tommy Naiman (14:40.79), Dominic Delmoro (14:42.17), and Ryan Champa (14:55.67) would finish third, fourth, and fifth for the Blue Streaks to round up the top five.

Most of the team traveled to Oberlin College for the Bob Kahn Invitational on Saturday. 

To get things started, the men's 4 x 100 meter relay of Cameron Klauke, Garrett Clark, Dustin Horner, and Jimmy Kartsonas ran 41.08 seconds to take the win in the event. 

In the men's 1500 meter run, freshman Chris Whiting would lead the way for the Blue Streaks, running 4:09.54 in his first time competing in the event. Senior Matt Costanzo would follow, finishing seventh with a time of 4:10.75. James Johnson would pick up a personal best of 4:14.80, followed by Phil Coury running 4:15.50 in his first time running the 1500. 

The men's 400 meter dash also did not disappoint as both Basheer Alramahi (47.88 seconds) and Garrett Clark (48.13 seconds) would finish first and second. Sophomore Brody Hanlon ran 51.27 seconds, placing sixth overall, followed by Tim Herczog running 51.54 seconds to earn a seventh place finish. 

Senior Jimmy Kartsonas would continue to propel as he would place second in the 100 meter dash, running 11.06 seconds. Cameron Klauke would come back and run 11.31 seconds to place sixth for the Blue Streaks.

Chris Whiting and Joe Scherer would double back for JCU in the men's 800 meter run placing seventh and ninth overall. Whiting crossed the finish line in 2:03.11, while Scherer finished 2:04.57. 

Both Mick Doyle and Victor Ononogbo would open up in the 400 meter hurdles for JCU this weekend. Doyle would place second with a time of 55.65 seconds, while Ononogbo placed sixth crossing the line in 56.08 seconds. 

Sophomore Dustin Horner would double back and earn his second consecutive personal best in the 200 meter dash coming off of last weekend in the 100. He would pick up the win with a time of 22.05 seconds, followed by Cameron Klauke, who finished sixth with a time of 22.58 seconds. 

To finish the day off, in the field events, senior Corey Minton would place second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.23 meters. Freshman Jeremy Frazao placed seventh with a mark of 12.63 meters to contribute for the Blue Streaks. 

Junior Matt Russo would earn the victory in the men's shot put with a mark of 42.68 meters to continue his progression. 

The Blue Streaks will be back in action next week as they travel to Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania for the Dave Labor Invitational.
