Volleyball Buries Battling Bishops, Firing into NCAC Final

The Blue Streaks will do battle with host Wittenberg on Saturday with a championship and NCAA bid on the line

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – In the first year as members of the North Coast Athletic Conference, John Carroll Volleyball will play for a conference crown.

The Blue Streaks fired past Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday, 3-1, in a strong NCAC Tournament Semifinal victory.

John Carroll won the opening two sets with authority, 25-14 and 25-16, before dropping the third set, 16-25, and roaring for a dominant finish, 25-17. JCU will face host Wittenberg University for the NCAC tourney title on Saturday at 1 pm at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

The first set started out even before the Blue Streaks settled in and went to town. JCU roared for a 10-0 lead, proving unstoppable with Olivia Mogyordy at the service line. JCU never looked back en route to victory. Natalie Glowe dominated the set with plenty of her trademark kills, though JCU got contributions from all over.

JCU never trailed in the second set, utilizing OWU errors and showing strength on long points. A mammoth 8-point run tells the tale of this one, as OWU miscues helped turn an 11-9 lead to an insurmountable 19-9 advantage for JCU. Mary Kate Sheehan provided a number of important kills en route to the dominant conquest.

The Battling Bishops gradually built an advantage in the third set, sneaking ahead with a 17-12 lead as the Blue Streaks looked out of synch. Ohio Wesleyan finished things off with a 5-point run to take the set and stay alive.

Tess Humphrey started the fourth set with a 5-0 JCU run, firing up three service aces. That set the tone for the Blue Streaks. Haley Nicholson especially emerged in the set, playing some front row in addition to her usual role as setter. Fellow senior Kendra Dziubinski also looked fantastic, particularly in authoring the match-clinching kill.

JCU's offense looked especially dynamic, with six players recording six or more kills. Natalie Glowe stood head and shoulders above all with 16 kills, adding 13 digs. Haley Nicholson's 6-kill, 17-assist day is worth plenty of praise. Olivia Mogordy tabbed a match-leading 22 digs.

The Blue Streaks will play for the NCAC Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at 1 pm. Standing in the way is the host and juggernaut #1 seed Wittenberg University. The Tigers swept JCU, 3-0, in the regular season matchup back on October 21.
