Resilience on Display as Softball Splits at Marietta

JCU rebounded from a run-rule loss in Game 1 to beat the Pios in Game 2

MARIETTA – Resilience has been important part of the new era of John Carroll Softball, on full display today.

While the opening game of the road doubleheader at Marietta College was less than ideal (an 11-0 loss), the Blue Streaks roared back for a game two win.

The Blue Streaks secured a split by picking up a 6-5 victory, the third split with the Pioneers in four years.

Game 1
The first two innings were quiet, but the third inning was an eruption. The Pioneers blasted a 6-spot in the third, clubbing six hits and taking advantage of two JCU errors.

The Pios continued to press the advantage. Marietta plated five more runs in the fifth, getting to the run rule. Danielle Orendi took the loss.

Kendall Trunzo and Angela Vitantonio tallied hits for John Carroll.

Game 2
In a nice start, John Carroll marked down two runs. Norah Bradley opened things in the first inning with a 2-run single to left center. Marietta quickly hit a solo shot to halve the lead entering the second.

Kristin Dems pitched a scoreless second before allowing the Pios to tie the game in the third. Emily Graves settled things down until a wacky fifth inning.

Katherine Nativio got aboard on an error with one out to start the frame. Kendall Trunzo doubled to put two runners in scoring position for Alyssa McPeek, who calmly stroked a double to right, snagging the lead. A Melissa Smith RBI single and a Bradley sacrifice fly upped the advantage to 6-2. JCU would need every run.

Graves got into trouble in the bottom of the inning, as the Pios plated two and had a runner at second with two outs when Kaylinn Samuelraj entered. The first year reliever slammed the door shut. The Solon native didn't allow a baserunner the rest of the way, earning her first collegiate save.

Next Up
John Carroll will now enjoy some time off for Easter break. Weather permitting, JCU will head to Mount Union on Wednesday in a rescheduled OAC doubleheader.
