Volleyball Drops to Denison in Difficult NCAC Defeat

The Blue Streaks could not content with the Big Red's front line

GRANVILLE, Ohio – A rough stint continued for John Carroll Volleyball on Saturday.

In a road North Coast Athletic Conference match at Denison University, the Blue Streaks lost a five-setter in a disappointing result, the team's fifth loss in six matches.

JCU drops to 1-2 in NCAC play after a 25-23, 11-25, 26-28, 25-19, 7-15 defeat at the Big Red.

Early service aces helped the visitors fire out to a 14-7 lead in the opening set. But Denison fought back into the set and a 16-16 tie. The Big Red snuck ahead, 23-20, before JCU tied it back up at 23. After a Denison timeout, a pair of Hailey Williams service aces secured the set one win for JCU.

In the second set, the Big Red took control early. The hosts roared out to an 8-0 advantage and never really looked back. Denison was nearly unstoppable up front, making only 1 error the whole set against a whopping 16 kills.

The teams battled closely in the third set the whole way. Khloe Trivoli and Grace Jones both tabbed key kills to keep JCU in the thick of it. Denison managed to get to set point, 24-22, but kills by Trivoli and Natalie Glowe put JCU in a position to win at 25-24. But a pair of JCU attack errors and Denison kills helped the Big Red steal a 28-26 victory.

Backs against the wall, the Blue Streaks rolled to a 15-8 lead in the fourth set. Kallan Hrics started to make an impact, tabbing a couple kills to keep Denison at an arm's length. A pair of late kills by Glowe sealed the deal for JCU.

Denison was in full control the whole fifth set, opening up a 3-point lead to start. After a pair of JCU kills, Denison hit the visitors with a 6-point run. The Blue Streaks clawed within two points, 9-7, but then the Big Red buried John Carroll down the stretch with six straight kills to clinch it, as JCU's block simply could not contend with Denison's red-hot offense.

Denison finished with an impressive .259 hitting percentage to JCU's .144. While JCU tabbed 13 service aces, 10 service errors also hurt.

JCU's young players led the way up front, as Jones topped the team with 12 kills, followed by Trivoli's 11. Tess Murray tallied 32 assists. Olivia Mogyordy made 30 digs.
