Volleyball Beats Two PAC Powerhouses in Saturday Sweep

The Blue Streaks beat both Hiram and Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE – Looking for some late-season momentum, Saturday's results were just what the doctor ordered.

John Carroll Volleyball beat Hiram College, 3-2, and host Franciscan, 3-0. Hiram and Franciscan are tied atop the Presidents Athletic Conference standings, so the wins were not cakewalks.

In a matchup of long-ago conference rivals, the Blue Streaks reverse swept the Terriers, 19-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-10. Against the host Barons, the Blue Streaks notched a nice sweep 25-17, 25-18, and 26-24.

JCU vs. Hiram
The Terriers' offense was unstoppable in the first set, with 16 kills against just one error in a strong start. Hiram looked less invincible in the second set, but JCU's offense struggled to generate any momentum, with just 6 kills and 6 errors.

Natalie Glowe helped to will the Blue Streaks off the mat in the third set, as JCU got out to a 15-9 start. Mary Kate Sheehan turned on the jets down the stretch, allowing JCU to stroll to an easy set three win.

Three straight kills by Hailey Williams invigorated JCU in the fourth set, as the senior caught fire en route to a 10-7 lead. The senior continued to contribute big plays down the stretch, while Glowe and Khloe Trivoli provided kills to put it out of reach.

The teams played a 7-6 deadlock early before the Clevelanders got going. Trivoli played a key role with a trio of kills, helping the Blue Streaks to surprise the Terriers.

Glowe led the Blue Streaks with 16 kills, followed by Sheehan with 13 and Williams with 12. Tess Murray contributed 36 assists, a season-high. Olivia Mogyordy managed 27 digs.

JCU vs. Franciscan
In the first and second sets, the JCU front line carried forward the momentum from the previous match.

The Blue Streaks erupted for 13 kills in the first set and 17 kills in the second set, with only 4 errors scattered across the two. JCU largely cruised at the start.

The third set proved to be a bit closer. But the Blue Streaks managed to pull it off in a narrow finisher, thanks to the effective offense and a nice advantage on the block.

Glowe topped the team with 11 kills. Murray tallied 25 kills, while Mogyordy notched 21 digs.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks have a huge match at home on Wednesday. John Carroll hosts Wittenberg in a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament final.
