In an NCAC Title Rematch, Wittenberg Sweeps JCU Volleyball

JCU fought hard against a tough Wittenberg front line

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Final brought a rowdy crowd to the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

However, John Carroll Volleyball could not unseat the reigning champs.

The Tigers set down the Blue Streaks in three sets, though it was an exciting affair, with a final line score of 23-25, 21-25, 22-25.

Natalie Glowe did make history in the match despite the defeat. The senior from Kirtland became the 11th Blue Streak in program history to reach 1,000 kills. Glowe has had a massive impact on the program over her last four seasons.

The Blue Streaks and Tigers fought tooth and nail in the opening set. The teams battled closely much of the way, with neither team gaining enough traction to make a run. Wittenberg snuck ahead, 21-19, so JCU called a timeout to regroup. The teams split the next four points, so JCU took another timeout. The Blue Streaks fought off setpoint but Wittenberg's powerful frontline got the sealing kill.

The Tigers fired out of the second set. JCU struggled on serve-receive midway through the set, leading to a JCU timeout right before the technical timeout with Wittenberg ahead, 14-8. John Carroll got within two on a couple occasions, and the Tigers sensed the momentum turning, taking timeouts to stem the tide. After JCU got within 23-21, the Tigers tallied the final two points.

Out of the break, John Carroll stormed out to a 7-0 lead with Tess Murray at the service line. Three kills by Mary Kate Sheehan – the reigning NCAC Athlete of the Week – helped to get out the hosts to a huge start. But the Tigers quickly fought back into it, with a 6-point run getting Wittenberg back in front, 11-9. The Tigers threatened to run away with it, breaking out to 5-point leads a couple times. JCU kept within striking distance but could not make the run necessary for the comeback.

Sheehan topped the team with 11 kills. Kallan Hrics notched eight. Tess Murray played nearly the whole match, nabbing 27 assists. Glowe, beyond her 7 kills, led the team with 17 digs. Olivia Mogyordy also tallied 14.
