Anthony Markello Scores NCAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award

Markello wins the honor for the second time in his career

CLEVELAND – A fantastic Florida week has secured a high honor for John Carroll Men's Tennis. 

The Blue Streaks notched a 3-1 record during the annual spring trip to the Sunshine State. 

One of the team's veteran leaders, Anthony Markello, has garnered North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors. 

Markello steered the JCU effort all week at #2 singles and #1 doubles. The senior notched a 3-1 record at both spots. 

Markello started the week off right with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in a narrow team win over Adrian. In another tight match, the JCU Sports Information star scored a big 6-1, 6-3 victory over Wartburg. In a sweep win over Concordia Chicago, the East Aurora, New York native fired up a 6-0, 6-0 conquest. Mary Washington dealt Markello a close defeat in the trip's finale.

The veteran paired up with Jean Davin this week at #1 singles. In the 4-3 wins over Adrian and Wartburg, Markello and Davin combined for 6-3 victories. In the next match against Concordia Chicago, the talented duo rolled, 6-0. The final doubles match of the week against Mary Washington went unfinished. 

For the season, Markello has posted a 4-2 record in singles and a 3-2 mark in doubles play. Markello last won athlete of the week honors on March 25, 2024. 

Markello and the Blue Streaks have a busy weekend ahead against DePauw and Oberlin.
