The Blue Streaks completed Round 1 tied for 15th, though weather suspended the opening round for many teams

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – A solid start has John Carroll Men's Golf looking solid after the first 18 holes of the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Blue Streaks tallied a team score of 295 (+7), standing in a tie for 15th place after the first round at Mission Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

The first round took place on the El Campeon Course, with JCU's score setting up the Blue Streaks well for the second day. The top 18 teams make the cut and play two more rounds on Thursday and Friday.

With early morning tee times beginning at 8 am, JCU avoided the lightning later in the day. After a day in the 70's, tomorrow looks to be hotter with temperatures in the 80's. As of 4:15 pm, play was suspended due to lightning and rain, halting play for all teams not already finished.

"The guys demonstrated patience today and rallied on the back nine of El Campeon," said Head Coach Jeff Pawlowski '91. "Closing with a team score of 4 under over the final nine holes was a great way to end day one. We also beat the weather. Tomorrow we need to remain focused on Las Colinas and get the job done."

Justy VonLehmden guided the team in the opening round. The Saint John's Jesuit grad looked even-keeled from the start, with just one bogey on the front nine. The junior's finish on the back nine was impressive, with four birdies in the final five holes, including three straight to end the round. The star finished the day with an even 72.

Daniel Donahue experienced a mixed front nine before roaring on his final nine. The Pittsburgher turned in three birdies on the back nine, including back-to-back beauties on No. 14 (Par 5) and No. 15 (Par 3). The junior's excellent finish lowered his score to a 73 (+1).

Wade Boyle similarly had some jitters early with a number of bogeys on Par 4 holes. But the Greensburg, Pennsylvania native found his groove on the final nine, avoiding any bogeys while corralling birdies on No. 10 and 11. For the day, the NCAC medalist chipped in a 74 (+2).

Austin Malley contributed the final counting score. A birdie on No. 4 got his day going. A pair of birdies on Par 5 holes (No. 10 and 17) steadied him down the stretch. The Venetia, Pennsylvania native scored a 76 (+4) for his first round.

London Hoyser rounded out the crew. A birdie on No. 16 highlighted his day, as the junior tabbed a 79 (+7).
