Opportunities Knocked And JCU Women's Soccer Answered In Win Over Oberlin

Val Korb (#9) scored a goal with 18 seconds remaining in the first half that proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win over Oberlin

The opportunities came knocking for John Carroll Friday afternoon, and the Blue Streaks were able to answer on two occasions for a 2-1 victory over Oberlin in a non-conference match held at Don Shula Stadium.

Box Score

After their first five shots were either high, wide, blocked or saved, the Blue Streaks were able to connect on their sixth. Following a corner kick that Oberlin could not clear, Aleks Quenneville (East Amherst, NY, Williamsville East) blasted in her first goal of 2009 from just over 20 yards out to put JCU ahead in the 31st minute.

As the first half wound down, John Carroll seized on what turned out to be the game-winning opportunity. Caroline McGraw (Lakewood, NY, Southwestern Central) chased down a pass and reached the ball before the Oberlin keeper. She was able to kick the ball off the keeper and Valerie Korb (Gates MIlls, OH, Mayfield) was in the right place at the right time, drilling a low shot off the rebound that tucked inside the right post.

The goal came with 18 seconds left in the period and staked John Carroll a 2-0 lead.

Oberlin, however, would answer right back just 32 seconds into the second half. Taking the opening kick, the Yeowomen raced down and connected on the first shot they took as Lori Sako fed Lois Immerman, whose slide shot beat Streaks keeper Molly Gradowski (Bethesda, MD, Georgetown Visitation) to the left post.

JCU would control a majority of the possession in the second half, but Gradowski had to make three saves in the final half to preserve the win.

John Carroll, which won the battle of shots, 20-10, improves to 2-4-1 with the win while Oberlin falls to 2-3-1 with the loss..
