Emily Day was one of seven Blue Streaks that shot 50 percent or better from the field against Marietta
This one was not only for the victory, but for free chips and salsa, too.

The John Carroll women ran past the young and inexperienced Marietta Pioneers Saturday, defeating them, 102-66.

Box Score

According to the terms of a promotional banner hanging in clear view at the DeCarlo Varsity Center, whenever a JCU basketball team team scores 100 points or more, Chipotle restaurant gives out vouchers for free chips and salsa.

With the score standing at 99-65 with 31 seconds to go, JCU senior guard Kate Mahoney made a layup to push the Blue Streaks over the 100-point mark. Her teammates on the bench jumped up and cheered.

“It was the biggest basket of my life,'' Mahoney said with a smile after the game.

She got fouled on the play and made her free throw boost her team's score to 102.

It was the second time this season that John Carroll (9-7 overall, 6-4 OAC) defeated Marietta (3-14, 1-9).

How dominating were the Blue Streaks?

--They outrebounded Marietta, 49-27

--They shot better than 57 percent in the first half and 54 percent for the game

--Their 102 points were a season high

--Three players scored 20 points or more, led by guard Lee Jennings with a game-high 23

“We made our shots today,'' JCU coach Kristie Maravalli said.

She smiled as her athletic director, Laurie Massa, walked by and said “Chips and salsa for everybody!”

“Food motivates us,'' Maravalli quipped.

The Pioneers, with only two upperclassmen on their roster, struggled the whole game. They made just 1 of 10 3-point shots and made just 40 percent of their baskets from the field.

Senior Whitney Swain and freshman Aleisha Guiler led their team with 18 points each.

It was the second straight win for John Carroll and a good way to start up a winning streak of two straight victories.
