Katie Mahoney and her fellow seniors came up two points shy in their final regular season home game
On senior night, a freshman would be the hero.
Unfortunately, it was John Carroll's senior night and the hero was from Heidelberg.
Jordan Ickes' lay-up with less than a second on the clock proved to be the game-winning points in a 66-64 victory by the visitors that spoiled the final home game for the four Blue Streak seniors.
Box Score
Heidelberg had appeared to seize control late, as a 9-4 run capped by a pair of Jenny Miller free throws had put the Berg ahead 59-54 with 2:21 to play.
But JCU would claw back and tie the game at 62-62 on a
Sadie Zander three-pointer with 44 ticks left.
Ickes would score the final four points for Heidelberg, first beating the shot clock on a short jumper with 14 seconds left. After
Lee Jennings tied the game at 64-64 with five seconds remaining, Stacey Barker found Ickes streaking toward the basket for the game-winning play.
Starting slow was not an issue for the Blue Streaks tonight as they scored 16 of the game's first 20 points.
But after
Whitney Hamilton drained a three-pointer at the 13:08 mark to make the score 16-4, John Carroll would miss 14 of its next 15 shots as a 12-point lead turned into a four-point deficit. With Chelsey Calhoun's hot hand leading the way, the Berg would take a 29-25 lead into the half.
Heidelberg continued the assault to start the second half. After Hamilton cut the visitors' lead to two points on a lay-up, Heidelberg scored ten of the next 12 points, with both Stacey Richard and Stacey Barker draining three-pointers to give the Berg its first double digit lead, 41-31, at the 16:35 mark.
With the help of Jennings and
Laura Gruber, JCU managed to climb back into the game, engineering an 8-0 run to close the gap to 41-39. Heidelberg briefly surged back out by five on a Jordan Ickes three-pointer, but a Hamilton three tied the game at 46-46, and a Sureck fast break lay-up put JCU back on top 48-46.
Heidelberg answered back and took a 50-48 lead following a put back by Betsy Shrider, but Hamilton tied the game at 50-50 as the game tucked inside seven minutes left in regulation.
Heidelberg (6-18, 5-12 OAC), which won for just the second time on the road this season, was paced by Miller's 17 points, aided by a 9-11 effort from the free throw. Calhoun chipped in 11 and Ickes added ten. The game winning shot was part of a second half in which Ickes was 4-4 from the field and 1-1 from three-point range.
John Carroll (11-12, 8-9 OAC) was led by 34 points from Jennings, who has now scored at least 22 points in six consecutive games. Hamilton added 12 for the Blue Streaks, who finished the year 5-6 at home.
