After an 0-3 start to it season, maybe the only thing the women's soccer team needed was to come home.

Don Shula Stadium once again proved kind to the Blue Streaks, as John Carroll concluded the 2010 Carroll Classic as co-champions (with Case Reserve) thanks to a 3-0 shutout of Oberlin Saturday afternoon.

In returning to University Heights this weekend, the offense – which tallied just one goal in its first three matches – exploded with five in the last two days.

The Blue Streaks looked to attack the Yeowomen early on offense during the first half. A goal was booted by sophomore Amanda Buxton during the 23rd minute, using a breakaway to tally her first points of the season. JCU led by a 1-0 score at the end of the first half.

The offense continued attacking in the second half, and broke through when junior Rachel Grdina converted an assist from Aleks Quenneville into a goal during the 61st minute
.
The Streaks struck again two minutes later, as freshman Genny Goergen set Grdina up for her second goal of the game.

Considering the Streaks' slow start to the season, Grdina believed that getting the offense going was just a matter of time.

“It is important for the midfielders to be involved, and definitely being at home made the difference,” said Grdina after the first multiple-goal game of her career.

The women's soccer team is taking the two victories from the Carroll Classic as a step in the right direction. John Carroll's head coach Tracy Blasius was pleased team's performance against Oberlin

“I felt like this was our best game yet,” said Blasius. “We are moving in the right direction. We have had trouble finishing, so scoring three goals is great.”

John Carroll's record improves to 2-4 on the season, while Oberlin slips to 1-5.

The Blue Streaks shared the 2010 Carroll Classic title with Case Reserve as both teams finished the tournament 2-0 and had a plus-five goal differential.
