Pink will be a predominant color at the DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday, February 5
As February is the month known for Valentine's Day and the color pink, the John Carroll women's basketball team will be hosting a Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone game on Saturday, February 5 at 2:00 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Kay Yow Cancer fund.
The Cardinals of Otterbein College will travel to University Heights to partner with the Blue Streaks in the NCAA and Ohio Athletic Conference initiative for breast cancer awareness and research.
The fund was created in memory of former North Carolina State head women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who passed away on January 24, 2009 from breast cancer. Since the fund's inception, 1,300,000 dollars has been raised for scientific research focused on women's cancers.
At John Carroll's event, both women's basketball teams will be clothed in pink t-shirts. An alumni women's basketball game will take place at 11:30 a.m. and the gym will be adorned in pink decorations.
There will also be a pre-game recognition of the 40th anniversary of women's athletics at John Carroll.
All fans in attendance are encouraged to make a donation to the fund to work toward Coach Yow's goal of having 5,000 participants donate 1,000 dollars each.
In the words of Coach Yow, "I have a big vision. I want people to know that the coaches of women's teams are stepping forward to commit to making a difference. We have coaches who have breast cancer or have been affected by breast cancer, and we will have more in the future. If we push we can make a difference. I want people to hear Kay Yow Cancer Fund and think about helping people."
