The John Carroll women's basketball team scored the game's first five points and never looked back in a 71-66 season-opening win over Waynesburg University at the Allegheny Greg Richards Memorial Tip-Off Tournament in Meadville, Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon.

In her collegiate debut, freshman Erin Mog put the Blue Streaks on the board with a lay-up in the game's first minute, then went on to lead all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting (including 2-3 from 3-point range).

Allie Lustig added 15 points and made 6-6 from the free throw line, while Missy Spahar narrowly missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.

JCU took its biggest lead of the game at 33-17 on a Spahar free throw with 3:56 left in the first half, before a 9-0 run from the Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 33-26 at intermission.  Waynesburg drew within four points early in the second half, but could pull no closer as the Blue Streaks slammed the door to move to 1-0 on the year.

By virtue of the victory, the Blue & Gold will advance to play in the tournament's championship game against the winner of Allegheny College and Penn State-Altoona at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
