Emily Johanson (#32) had her most productive game thus far, with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting
Box Score
Turnovers and shooting woes plagued the Blue Streaks Saturday as the JCU women's basketball team dropped a 65-49 decision to #20 Ohio Northern University at the DeCarlo Varsity Center in the squad's second consecutive game against a nationally ranked opponent.
A stingy Polar Bears' defense, one that entered today's action allowing the fewest points per game in the league (55.0), made things difficult, but even when the Blue & Gold had opportunities, they struggled to cash in. JCU made just 35% of its field goals, including 2-of-17 from 3-point range while committing 19 turnovers.
Minutes after Ohio Northern scored the day's first two buckets to open a 4-0 lead,
Allie Lustig and
Missy Spahar executed a nifty pick-and-roll to cut the visitors' advantage to 12-10 at the 10:30 mark.
A scoring drought lasting more than four minutes for both teams gave the scoreboard operator a break, and the first half ended, 30-22, with ONU on top.
Cenzle Yoder opened the second period on fire for the Bears, initiating a 20-6 run to start the half and put the Black & Orange up 50-38 with 12:25 to play. Not done yet, the Blue Streaks answered with a 14-2 surge that brought the tally to 55-44 with 4:45 remaining.
However, five straight points helped ONU regain control and close out the game.
Neither team was particularly successful from 3-point territory in the first half, but while JCU searched every corner of the gymnasium for a triple, the Polar Bears awoke to hit a trio of deep balls in the second stanza.
Freshman
Emily Johanson scored a career-high 14 points for the Blue Streaks, and Spahar also had 14 in the loss. ONU's Yoder led all scorers with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
With the loss, JCU slips to 5-2 overall, 0-2 in the OAC, and will travel to Bexley to play Capital University on Saturday, December 15 at 3:00 p.m.
