Volleyball Wins One In Opening Weekend At Elmhurst College Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 With a new coach and a young team, the John Carroll volleyball team showed some expected growing pains, but came away with one victory at the 2012 Elmhurst College Invitational in Elmhurst, IL.

The Blue Streaks opened with a 7-25, 15-25, 22-25 defeat at the hands of Carthage College.  Freshman Sarah Orlandi led the way with six kills, while Charlotte Sykora added five.  Teresa Noewer had eight digs, while Jessica Kodrich had 14 assists.

In its second game, JCU picked up its inaugural win of the 2012 campaign, taking down Bethany Lutheran 25-17, 25-13, 25-18 in straight games.  A host of Streaks contributed to the victory, led by Sarah Slagle (11 kills), Noewer (eight kills, 10 digs), and Kodrich (26 assists, three aces).

Games three and four were tight, competitive losses.  Whitman College dealt the Blue & Gold a 19-25, 13-25, 16-25 loss before Lake Forest College edged JCU in a five game marathon, 26-25, 20-25, 25-21, 26-28, 10-15.  Orlandi and Sykora combined for 32 kills in the two matches, while Kodrich (56 assists) and freshman Sara Kaminski (38 digs) also made their presences felt.

JCU will commence its home schedule this Wednesday, September 5 when it battles Hiram College at 7:00 p.m. at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
