Late First Half Goal The Difference As JCU Women's Soccer Knocks Off Regionally Ranked Mount Union

Box Score The John Carroll Blue Streaks women's soccer team entered today's match facing a number of obstacles to overcome.

There was the weather (torrential downpours soaked the field shortly before the start of the match), the prospect of facing the #4 ranked team in the region, and the challenge of trying to get a shot past the national player of the week.

John Carroll cleared all these hurdles by dominating the time of possession and getting the one goal it needed late in the first half for a 1-0 victory over the Purple raiders of Mount Union.

In the first half, the Blue Streaks kept constant pressure on Mount Union's goalkeeper, Maria Favorite, who was named Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week and National Soccer Coaches Association of America national Division III Player of the Week.

In the 42nd minute, JCU ended Favorite's streak of three consecutive shut-outs with a goal from Nicki Bohrer. Started by an excellent pass by Preston Mendel, Bohrer's sixth goal of the season was a low liner that skipped across Favorite's arms and gave the Blue Streaks the early lead that the team and head coach Mike Marich were looking for.

"With a quality keeper back there in Favorite, we really wanted to strike first in this match, and continue to stay aggressive on offense," Marich said after the game.

The Blue Streaks first half goal went unanswered the rest of the way as John Carroll won the match by that single tally. Mount Union entered today's match occupying first place in the OAC and riding a four-match winning streak that had vaulted the Purple Raiders to fourth in the region.

However, no stranger to strong competition John Carroll was able to defend their home turf. John Carroll played a very tough non-conference schedule to start the 2013 season. The importance of playing such high caliber teams before entering Ohio Athletic Conference competition showed in the Blue Streaks win today. "

Preparing for the teams in the OAC the best way possible is always the goal when starting the season with out of conference games," said Marich, "I believe that playing schools that we know will be the best in the region throughout the year definitely prepared us to win matches such as the one against Mount Union today."

With the win, John Carroll improved to 5-6-3 overall and 2-2 in the OAC. Mount Union falls to 10-3-1 and 3-1 in league play.

This was John Carroll's fifth consecutive win over Mount Union and fourth by a shutout over that span of matches.
